The Ducati Multistrada 1200 Enduro is an off-road motorcycle from the Italian vehicle manufacturer Ducati . The travel enduro was presented to the press on November 17, 2015 at the EICMA international motorcycle fair in Milan and is manufactured in Borgo Panigale .

The sales name Multistrada [ ˈmʌltiˈstra: da ] is a made-up word from Multi ( German  many ) and Italian Strada ( German  street ), the addition Enduro ( enˈdʊroʊ , from Endurance ) indicates the improved off-road mobility of this variant.

Changes compared to the basic model

The basis of the Enduro version is the Multistrada 1200 S with the two-cylinder engine with variable valve control (DVT) , which has been in production since 2014 . The front wheel diameter has been increased from 17 to 19 inches and the single one has been replaced by a longer and stiffer two-sided swing arm to improve off-road mobility. The suspension travel has been extended by 30 to 200 mm, which increases the ground clearance to 205 mm. The steering head angle is a little steeper at 65 degrees, which makes the steering more agile. The ergonomics have been optimized by changing the handlebar geometry, the footrests and a narrower seat shape for standing driving. The brake pedal is height adjustable. The side radiator panels are larger and made of aluminum instead of plastic. The fuel tank has been increased by 10 liters to a total of 30 liters in order to increase the range. The cast wheels were replaced by cross-spoke wheels. First gear has been reduced by around 25% and the engine mapping has been modified to improve the drive's response at low engine speeds. According to the manufacturer, around 266 parts were modified under the direction of Frederico Valentini.

construction

drive

The engine called Testastretta 11 ° originally comes from the Ducati 1198 Superbike . The liquid-cooled two - cylinder engine generates a nominal output of 118 kW (160 hp) and a maximum torque of 136 Nm at a speed of 7500 min −1 from a displacement of 1198 cm³ . The (two cylinder of the V-type engine having a cylinder angle of 90 degrees. The four valves per cylinder head are of two above are those camshaft via drag levers opened and angled rocker closed Desmodromik ). The two cylinders have a bore of 106 mm in diameter, the pistons have a stroke of 67.9 mm with a compression ratio of 12.5: 1.

The motorcycle has a mass power density of 0.7111 hp / kg, accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 240 km / h. The four-stroke engine used according to the manufacturer average of 6.5 liters of fuel per 100 km and km has a theoretical range of 450th

The power output is controlled electronically (ride-by-wire) and includes both a multi-stage traction control system and a "wheelie control", which prevents the front wheel from getting on when the vehicle is accelerated. The response behavior of the electronic support can be selected via various "Riding Modes", a selectable programming that can be set via handlebar switches. A cruise control system ( cruise control ) is also available.

landing gear

The frame is a tubular steel frame and has a load-bearing motor-gear unit. The chassis includes an upside-down fork from Marzocchi with a Ø 48 mm stanchion diameter and 200 mm travel. The rear two-arm swing arm made of cast light metal has a central spring strut from Sachs with a lever system and 200 mm suspension travel. The "Ducati Skyhook Suspension" (DSS) adapts the rebound and compression damping of the Sachs spring elements to the road surface conditions within 10 milliseconds. The trail is 110 mm. The rim sizes are 3.0 × 19 ″ at the front and 4.5 × 17 ″ at the rear. The tires are 120 / 70-19 at the front and 170 / 60-17 at the rear.

A claw-shifted six-speed gearbox with helical teeth converts the torque, the power is separated by a hydraulically operated multi-plate oil bath clutch. A chain in the secondary drive transfers the power from the gearbox output shaft to the rear axle .

The dry weight with anti-lock braking system is 225 kg, the ready-to-drive weight 254 kg. The maximum payload is 211 kg, the gross vehicle weight is 465 kg.

Braking system

A floating double disc brake with a diameter of 330 mm and a 4-piston radial fixed calliper from Brembo decelerates the front wheel. A single-disc brake with a diameter of 265 mm and a double-piston floating caliper works on the rear wheel. The braking system is supported by a disengageable, partially integrated anti-lock braking system with curve function from Bosch (9.1ME). Depending on the selected riding mode, the motorcycle needs a distance of at least 39.8 meters to decelerate from 100 km / h to a standstill.

Fuel supply

The mixture is formed by electronic fuel injection. The ignition with two spark plugs per cylinder is digitally controlled. The manufacturer recommends using unleaded petrol with a knock resistance of at least 95 octane. The fuel tank has a volume of 30 liters, of which 4 liters are in reserve. A regulated three-way catalytic converter with two lambda sensors cleans the exhaust gases so that the vehicle falls below the limit values of the EURO4 emission class . The engine produces an average of 129.9 g of carbon dioxide per kilometer. The two exhaust manifolds of the 2-in-1 exhaust system open into a raised rear silencer made of aluminum at the rear on the right-hand side of the vehicle.

Electrics

The 12 V starter battery has a capacity of 12 ampere hours and supplies the electric starter . The alternator generates an electrical output of 520 watts. The motorcycle has two sockets with a 12-volt supply. The instrumentation is designed as a liquid crystal display, in the cockpit there is a color TFT display with a screen diagonal of 12.7 cm. The enduro model also has LED headlights with cornering lights .

Market positioning

At the time of its market launch, the Multistrada Enduro is the most powerful motorcycle in the travel enduro class, together with the KTM 1290 Super Adventure . Competitive models include:

Reviews

“The Ducati contrasts the martial, bulky technology look of its competitors with a certain elegance and grace. On the very first few meters in difficult terrain, you feel as if you are forcing Anna Ewers to fight in the mud . But there is. During our off-road lap lasting several hours, the impression arose: Wherever a GS Adventure fills up, you can also get along with the Multistrada Enduro. "

“Who is the Multistrada 1200 Enduro intended for? First of all, definitely not for hard enduro riders. Modern, heavy travel enduros are designed for 90 percent road use, the Multistrada 1200 Enduro shifts the ratio to 80 percent asphalt. It is worth considering for those who like to travel who like to tear off long distances and who do not shy away from gravel roads. "

“Ultimately, Ducati has to be given great credit for its Multistrada 1200 Enduro: The conception is good, the implementation is also successful and in almost all points very practical. For a manufacturer that has not yet had any off-road competence, this Duc is even an incredibly strong premium. "

- Ulf Böhringer : Rheinische Post

“Overall, I would say the Multistrada Enduro is perfectly capable of conquering just about any dirt road and modest trail, but it is really a bit too heavy and much too expensive to consider extreme conditions riding or serious air time. Sure I could be done, but one imagines that lovely new brushed aluminum bodywork will be just as fearsomely expensive to replace as any other Ducati bodywork. ”

“In summary, I would say the Multistrada Enduro is perfectly capable of tackling unpaved roads and undemanding trails, but it really is a little too heavy and far too expensive to consider for extremely difficult conditions or serious jumps. Sure it could, but keep in mind that this lovingly brushed aluminum fairing is just as terrifyingly expensive to replace as any other Ducati fairing. "
