successor BMW R 1250 GS Adventure

The BMW R 1200 GS Adventure is a motorcycle from the vehicle manufacturer BMW . The travel enduro was presented in an official press release on October 7, 2013. It was presented to the public for the first time a short time later at the EICMA two-wheeler trade fair in Milan . Like all models in the R series, the motorcycle is powered by a boxer engine and final assembly at the BMW plant in Berlin in Spandau . The model designation GS means terrain / road , the internal factory code is K51 . The sales name remained unchanged. The basis of the motorcycle is the R 1200 GS (K50) introduced one year earlier

Differentiation from the GS K50 and the previous model (K255)

The Adventure is basically equipped for long-distance travel. The volume of the fuel tank, which is made of aluminum instead of plastic, is 30 liters larger than that of the GS with 20 liters. The range of around 600 km (depending on driving style) is comparable to that of the previous model . The fuel tank is 3 l smaller, but the new engine has also reduced fuel consumption by 0.2–0.3 l. The reserve indicator lights up unchanged when there is approx. 4 l remaining in the tank. There is now a small compartment in the front panel of the tank, in which items such as sunglasses or the wallet are quickly to hand.

The spring travel is also 2 cm longer. Compared to its predecessor, this means that the ground clearance is 2 cm greater. In addition, the flywheel mass in the drive train has been increased by around 950 g and an additional vibration damper has been added in order to achieve smoother running, especially at low speeds. A larger windshield and so-called flaps on the sides should further improve wind and weather protection. The driver's seat can now be adjusted in height and angle in two stages. The seat height is 890 or 910 mm, the step length is 1950 or 1990 mm and is thus slightly higher than that of the GS. Instead of cast aluminum wheels, the Adventure has cross-spoke wheels. With 120/70 R 19 at the front and 170/60 R 17, the dimensions are the same as for the K50. The cross-spoke wheels have the advantage over cast wheels that if the tire hits a stone, for example, they only deform rather than break. If you then realign the spokes, rim damage can usually be repaired with simple tools, even far away from civilization.

In order to offer the enduro boots better support in difficult terrain, the footrests are very coarse so that dirt can also fall off through the holes. In addition, a foldable elevation is attached to the foot brake lever, which is swiveled down when driving while standing and takes the changed foot position into account.

Aside from the features that cannot be retrofitted, there are also accessories that are standard on the Adventure in contrast to the basic GS. The Adventure comes with an engine protection bar and hand protectors ex works.

Special equipment

There were three additional packages for the model launch, which, unlike when the GS was launched, could be combined with one another as required.

  • The comfort package contains a chrome-plated exhaust system, heated grips and a tire pressure monitor (RDC).
  • The dynamic package added the "Fahrmodi-Pro", LED indicators and the LED headlights with daytime running lights. Since the 2016 model year, the dynamics package has also included a lean angle-dependent ABS control (ABS-Pro) and a dynamic brake light.
  • The touring package includes an extended on-board computer (Pro), the electronic chassis "Dynamic ESA", the case holder for the aluminum cases, a cruise control system, navigation preparation and a pair of additional headlights.

All options, with the exception of the Pro on-board computer, were also available individually. Apart from the packages, the list of accessories offered the option of equipping the machine with off-road tires instead of the Michelin Anakee 3 ex works. It is also possible to have the engine throttled. Shift Assistant Pro was not available ex works, but was also available as an option. It enables upshifts and downshifts without actuating the clutch or throttle valve in the driving-relevant load and speed ranges. From model year 2015 it was also available ex works. An anti-theft alarm system rounded off the list.

Color variations

Color code "Racing blue metallic matt" of the model year 2014

The following colors were available for the 2014 model year: olive plain matt, racing blue metallic matt and alpine white plain. The colors changed in the 2016 model year. The following were now available: Ocean blue metallic matt, Racing red matt and light white.

The "LC" paradox

In order to be able to differentiate the K255 from the K51 as well as the K25 from the K50 more easily, the abbreviation LC for liquid cooled is often placed after the model name in internet forums . This is not entirely correct in that it is still mainly cooled by the airstream. A liquid still takes over the smaller part of the cooling. Only the cooling medium changed from oil in the K255 (K25) to a water-based liquid in the K51 (K50).

Reviews

“Anyone who has once climbed the motorcycle mountain will be more than surprised. Because the big adventure is a real sweeper! "

- Matthias Hirsch : Bikerszene.de

“Almost one kilogram more flywheel mass on the crankshaft makes the Adventure GS easier to control in off-road operation and also ensures more calm in the framework when starting off. The excellent chassis is a little more manageable due to the slightly steeper steering head angle and, despite its impressive weight, amazes with its extreme maneuverability on loose ground. "

- Patrick Sauter : MO - The motorcycle magazine

“Once you've set off, you know what makes this motorcycle so desirable: the heavyweight reacts with such agility that is otherwise only known from much smaller motorcycles. The high seating position gives the driver a sense of security. You sit so relaxed on the Adventure that even long journeys on the autobahn are not a torture, as the return trip from the Weserbergland to Berlin showed. "
