BMW R 16

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The BMW R 16 is a 1930 to 1934 of BMW produced motorcycle with a two-cylinder horizontally opposed four-stroke engine. As a sports model, it was the sister model of the R 11 , which was designed as a touring model with a side-controlled engine.

history

At the London Olympic Show in November 1928, BMW presented the R 16 and R 11, the first motorcycles with a pressed steel frame. In the price lists No. 37 and No. 38 of January and February 1929, the motorcycles with pressed steel frames were announced for "Spring 1929"; they were no longer listed in price list no. 39 of March 1929. The delivery of motorcycles in Germany only began in the summer of 1930.

technology

In 1929 BMW changed the frame construction of the motorcycles. They turned away from the tubular frame and built frames pressed from sheet metal with rivets based on the model of the pressed steel motorcycles by Ernst Neumann-Neander . The 750 twin-cylinder boxer models, with the same engines, were now called the R 11 touring model and the R 16 as the sporty OHV variant .

The front fork was still a drawn short swing arm with leaf suspension.
