The BMW R 23 was a motorcycle by the German manufacturer BMW that was built from 1938. It was the successor to the R 20 .
history
Since from 1938 there was also a tax and driver's license requirement for motorcycles up to 200 cm³, but a new driving license class up to 250 cm³ was introduced, BMW took the opportunity to expand the displacement to 250 cm³. Series production started in June 1938 in Munich. After two years, BMW stopped production in 1940 due to the war after 8021 motorcycles were built.
technology
BMW offered to convert the R 20 to 250 cm³ in order to bring it to the performance of the R 23 with 2 HP more . To do this, connecting rods, pistons, cylinders, cylinder head gaskets and cylinder heads had to be replaced with the corresponding parts of the R 23 . Other differences between the models on the clutch and on the carburetor were not relevant to performance.
The drive train, the chassis, the brakes, the front fork and the ignition system were identical to the R 20 model . Only the alternator for the on-board voltage network now had an output of 6 V / 75 W. The R 23 model is the original version of all the 250 series BMW single-cylinder motorcycles with shaft drive that were built until 1966; designed as easy-care and economical everyday vehicles.
