BMW R 52 (1928-1929)

BMW Motorrad is a division of the vehicle and engine manufacturer BMW . The company was founded on March 7, 1916 as Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (BFW) in Munich and originally focused on the manufacture of aircraft engines . On July 21, 1917, the company was renamed Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH , and in 1918 it was renamed Bayerische Motoren Werke AG . The company has also been manufacturing motorcycles since 1923, and automobiles were added in 1928.

Today BMW is the only large-scale manufacturer of large-capacity motorcycles in Germany and one of the top-selling in Europe. On January 1, 2016, 522,239 BMW motorcycles were registered in Germany, which corresponds to a share of 12.4 percent.

history

BMW R 32 with two-cylinder boxer engine (1923–1926)
BMW R 26 (1955-1960)
BMW R 27
BMW R 60/6 (1973-1976)
BMW R 90 S.
BMW R 80 G / S (1980–1987)
BMW R 100 RS (1977)

BMW's first motorcycle, the R 32 , had a two - cylinder boxer engine and cardan drive , a design typical of BMW for a long time, which is still used today among others.

Two years later, a second series was added with the R 39 , the combination of a vertical individual cylinder and cardan drive was no less typical. For four decades, these two series were the BMW motorcycle range.

During the Second World War, BMW manufactured especially Wehrmacht sidecars, for example in Eisenach.

In 1955, with the introduction of the full swing BMW, the move away from straight-line suspension began . At the same time, the cardan drive was changed in such a way that the motorcycles do not tilt around the transverse axis like others when the load changes, but rather lift or lower completely. This unique driving behavior led to the nickname rubber cow .

In 1966, when the R 27 was phased out, the single-cylinder series was discontinued and only the two-cylinder series was continued. Compact automobiles had replaced motorcycles as the motor vehicle of the "little man". BMW was the only German manufacturer of motorcycles whose production of large-capacity motorcycles survived. The combination of boxer engine and cardan drive was meanwhile only available from BMW.

In 1969, BMW advanced into what was then the highest displacement class with the newly designed R 75/5 . But the Honda CB750 Four with four-cylinder engine, which was introduced at the same time, initiated a development that soon left all European motorcycle manufacturers behind compared to the Japanese. When BMW added displacement with the R 90 S in 1973, the previous year the Kawasaki Z1 with bucket tappets had already set another benchmark. From then on there were engines from Japan that were not only more powerful than those from BMW, but also had to be serviced less frequently.

1980 BMW surprised with the R 80 G / S , on the boom in trail bikes put that with the Yamaha XT 500 had begun. The R 80 G / S was not only the first enduro from BMW, but also the first enduro with a multi-cylinder engine. The designers had made a virtue out of the “need” of the lush cardan swing arm by doing without the second swing arm. Using a motorcycle with a multi-cylinder engine and cardan drive off-road seemed rather absurd at the time. That changed when BMW won the next Dakar Rally . After decades, BMW was suddenly back in the group of companies that had to be reckoned with in motorcycle racing.

BMW K 100 LT (1986-1991)

1983 saw the dawn of a new era for BMW motorcycles with the K 100 . Your lattice frame is placed on a load-bearing engine-gearbox block. The four-cylinder in- line engine with water cooling is not arranged transversely, as usual, but lengthways. This means that there is no need for a diversion between the crankshaft and cardan shaft. The cylinders are horizontal in order to achieve a center of gravity that is just as low as with boxer engines. Although the engines with manifold injection were comparatively advanced, they did not exhaust the performance limits of the state of the art of their time. Nevertheless, this drive is considered a remarkable engineering achievement because of its independent and consistent design. From 1988 the K 100 RS was the first motorcycle to be available with an anti-lock braking system . From 1989 the sporty version [BMW K1] was the first BMW to be equipped with four-valve technology, was the first motorcycle to have a regulated catalytic converter and the new Paralever , which equated the drive dynamics with the chain final drive .

In 1993 BMW introduced the R 1100 RS, contrary to its earlier announcement that it no longer wanted to develop motorcycles with boxer engines . Your engine took the conservative regular customers into account, even though it was completely redeveloped. The overhead camshaft was driven by a timing chain and operated the valves via rocker arms . The Telelever system on the R 1100 RS was spectacular and , for the first time on a production motorcycle, almost completely prevented sinking in when braking.

Also in 1993, Bayerische Motoren Werke first launched a motorcycle with the F 650 , the engine of which they had neither developed nor manufactured. The F 650 is based on the Aprilia Pegaso and, like this one, has a single-cylinder Rotax engine and chain final drive. It wasn't made by BMW either, but by Aprilia . The engines of the successor model G 650 are manufactured by Loncin in the People's Republic of China .

BMW C1 (2000-2003)

In 2000, BMW introduced the unusual C1 , a covered scooter . Instead of wearing a helmet , drivers are required to wear a seat belt . The C1 was aimed at the market segment between normal scooters and small cars like the Smart Fortwo .

In 2005, the K 1200 S was introduced, a series with a conventionally transversely installed four-cylinder engine, which gradually replaced the series with a longitudinally installed four-cylinder engine. This series is equipped with Duolever .

In 2006 BMW introduced the F 800 with a parallel twin ; initially with belt drive , later also with chain drive. The motors are from Rotax again.

In 2008 BMW launched the G 450 X sports enduro . The single cylinder engine is manufactured by Kymco in Taiwan .

BMW S 1000 RR (since 2009)

In 2009 BMW introduced the S 1000 RR . With an upside-down fork, transversely installed four-cylinder engine and chain final drive, it resembles the products of the Japanese competitors in this class.

In 2011 BMW introduced the K 1600 GT . It is the first series production six-cylinder motorcycle from German production.

In 2012, BMW launched the G 650 GS and G 650 GS Sertão travel enduros with single-cylinder engines again, after the entry-level models had also been equipped with two-cylinder engines from Rotax for a few years.

On April 8, 2013, BMW Motorrad and the TVS Motor Company signed a long-term cooperation agreement in Chennai, India . The goal is the joint development and production of motorcycles in the segment below 500 cubic centimeters.

BMW has been represented in the scooter segment with the C series since 2014 ; this also includes the BMW C evolution electric scooter . In June 2019, BMW presented the electric Vision DC Roadster , which optically uses elements of the successful boxer engines.

On April 4, 2020, BMW introduced the R 18 in the cruiser motorcycle market segment . Its 1802 cm³ engine is the largest 2-cylinder boxer engine ever built by BMW.

Berlin plant

Since 1967 are the BMW factory in Berlin, in the district Haselhorst of Spandau built motorcycles. Around 1800 employees now manufacture up to 550 machines every day. In 2001 the production of the one millionth motorcycle was celebrated.

BMW K 100 RS (1983-1993)
BMW R 1100 RS (1993-2001)

The Spandau plant is also an important supplier for BMW's car production. Among other things, all brake discs for all BMW car models are produced there.

The plant, which bears the number 3.1, has been continuously expanded and modernized since 2000. From 2001 to 2003 another production hall for motorcycles was built. The yellow "C-hooks", which slide on two floors on a rail system through the two assembly halls and on which the motorcycles go through the various production steps, are optically particularly characteristic of BMW motorcycle production. Even today, motorcycle production is still largely done by hand. Even the decorative strips on the motorcycles are still painted manually by particularly experienced employees.

On May 6, 2011, the two millionth BMW motorcycle rolled off the production line. It was a R 1200 GS .

On April 9, 2019, the plant's three millionth motorcycle, an S 1000 RR , was completed.

Government motorcycles

The German federal states equipped their motorcycle squadrons almost without exception with vehicles from BMW. Due to legal requirements, a Europe-wide tender is usually necessary today. Received z. B. in Berlin (2008) and in Hesse (2005) for economic reasons Moto Guzzi or Yamaha were awarded the contract. However, as in Hesse (2010), the 2012 tender for government motorcycles in Berlin was again won by BMW with the R 900 RT.

The police in the following countries, among others, drive BMW police motorcycles: Netherlands, France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Croatia, Denmark, Spain ( Guardia Civil ), Poland, Russia, Great Britain, Algeria, USA, Egypt, Ethiopia, Thailand, Kuwait, Kosovo and the Republic of China (Taiwan).

Currently (spring 2017) BMW sells the models F 700 GS , F 800 GS , F 800 GT and R 1200 GS as government motorcycles with appropriate special equipment.

Trivia

In fan circles, BMW motorcycles are referred to as "projectors". The name comes from the English-speaking world, where the abbreviation is more difficult to pronounce.

The BMW Motorrad Days have been taking place in Garmisch-Partenkirchen since 2002 . At the first edition of the event in Seefeld in Tyrol the name was still Bikermeeting.
