The BMW F 650 is an all-terrain motorcycle from BMW. The Aprilia Pegaso is the Aprilia version of this common development line.

The models

F 650

The BMW F 650 was presented for the first time in 1993. With its spoked wheels and the raised seating position, it is designed as an all-round model. This makes it suitable for both on-road and light terrain. The letter F in the sales name stands for Funduro , a suitcase word from Fun and Enduro . A total of 50,990 units of the F 650 were produced.

  • Year of construction 1993: Presentation of the BMW F 650, Rotax single-cylinder engine, carburetor, chain drive, an uncontrolled catalytic converter can be supplied as a special accessory.
  • Year of construction 1995: Cover of the steering head bearing against splashing water, unregulated catalytic converter as standard
  • Year of construction 1996: main stand as standard, larger color selection with new colors
  • Year of construction 1997: The new road-oriented model series BMW F 650 ST (ST = Strada) is presented.

F 650 ST

The more street-oriented model series BMW F 650 ST was added in 1996. The suffix ST stands for Italian strada ( German  street ). With the same engine and drive, there were differences to the off-road BMW F 650 in the following points:

  • Front wheel 18 instead of 19 inches
  • Road instead of off-road tires
  • Wheelbase shortened from 1480 to 1465 mm
  • Shorter rear travel 120 instead of 165 mm
  • Seat height 78.5 cm instead of 82 cm
  • Narrower, more cranked handlebars
  • Cockpit with integrated clock instead of the temperature display
  • Lower windshield
  • Changed design of windscreen, cockpit and stickers

13,349 units of the F 650 ST were produced.

The successor model , the BMW F 650 GS , appeared in 2000 .

criticism

The BMW F series is not without controversy among BMW motorcyclists, as the F machines lack typical BMW properties such as cardan drive . In addition, the motorcycles of the previous R and K series had engines developed by BMW itself. Instead, drives from Rotax were used in the F 650 , without the previous BMW-typical features. Especially in comparison with the almost identical Aprilia Pegaso, a break with the earlier independent BMW developments could be seen.

Single-cylinder motorcycles were also built by BMW before; however, with a longitudinally lying crankshaft, identical in construction to the horizontal cylinders of the R boxer engines . The F-series, on the other hand, is a conventional design without BMW characteristics.

“Although the F 650 is not a 'real BMW', but is manufactured by Aprilia in Italy and completed with Rotax engines, the workmanship and quality are excellent. The chassis and brakes are up to the 50 HP of the unthrottled engine at any time, and the handiness leaves nothing to be desired. The ground clearance is big enough to leave the road sometimes. "
