The BMW R 1150 GS is a motorcycle model designed as a travel enduro by the vehicle manufacturer BMW , which was produced from autumn 1999 to 2003 at the BMW plant in Berlin in Spandau .

The off-road motorcycle has been at the top of the registration statistics in Germany and many other markets since its market launch in September 1999 and was the best-selling motorcycle in Germany from 2001 to 2003. A total of 58,023 pieces were produced.

Like all models in the R series, the motorcycle is powered by a boxer engine. The model designation GS means terrain / road , the internal factory code is R21.

Technical specifications

engine

2-cylinder four-stroke boxer engine

The air and oil-cooled boxer engine generates a nominal output of 62.5 kW (85 hp) and a maximum torque of 98 Nm at a speed of 5250 min −1 from a displacement of 1130 cm³ . The two-cylinder engine has two inlet and two outlet valves per cylinder head and one overhead camshaft and rocker arm each, driven by gears and a chain . The four-stroke engine has a longitudinal crankshaft , wet sump lubrication, electronic intake manifold injection and electronic engine management. The cylinder bore has been enlarged from 99 to 101 mm in diameter compared to the previous model. The two pistons have a stroke of 70.5 mm with a compression ratio of 10.3: 1. The cylinder heads and crankshaft are from the 1100 S BMW R . The cylinder head covers are made of magnesium .

Power transmission

The primary drive takes place via gear wheels, the power separation via a hydraulically operated single-disk dry clutch . The claw-shift transmission has six gears, the secondary drive a cardan drive . The sixth gear is designed as overdrive as standard.

landing gear

The chassis consists of a load-bearing engine block with a screwed subframe at the front and rear. The trailing arm guided telescopic fork with a standpipe diameter of 35 mm has an adjustable spring base. The two- joint single-sided swing arm made of cast aluminum has a directly hinged central spring strut with an adjustable spring base and rebound damping. The EVO double disc brake from Brembo on the front wheel has a diameter of 305 mm, four-piston calipers and floating brake discs. The disc brake on the rear wheel has a diameter of 276 mm and a double piston caliper. An optional, partially integrated anti-lock braking system that can be switched off supports the deceleration. The tires of the cross-spoke wheels are 110/80-ZR19 at the front and 150/70-ZR17 at the rear. The steering head angle is 64 degrees, the caster 115 mm, the spring deflection at the front 190 mm and at the rear 200 mm. The oil cooler is integrated in the frame. The starter battery has a capacity of 19 Ah and supplies the electric starter . The alternator of the alternator generates an electrical output of 600 watts.

mass and weight

The seat height is adjustable from 84 to 86 cm. When fueled, the motorcycle weighs 271 kg, the maximum payload is 197 kg and the gross vehicle weight is 460 kg.

Fuel supply

The fuel tank holds 22.1 liters, of which 4 liters are in reserve. Mixture preparation and ignition timing are controlled by a Motronic MA 2.4 with overrun fuel cutoff . The manufacturer recommends the use of unleaded motor gasoline with a knock resistance of at least 95 octane, but fuels with only 92 octane can also be used. The average fuel consumption is 5.6 liters per 100 km at a speed of 120 km / h. The exhaust gases are treated by a regulated three-way catalytic converter with a lambda probe . The chrome-plated stainless steel exhaust system has two exhaust manifolds , the diameter of which is larger than that of the previous model from 38 to 45 mm.

Colours

The motorcycle was offered in yellow (sun yellow), orange (mandarin), black, silver metallic, graphite metallic and blue metallic / white. There was a choice of covers in black and red for the seat bench, and gray / red, blue / gray and yellow / black for the Adventure version.

Variations

A model with the nickname " Adventure " was also offered. Various parts have been changed here for better off-road properties.

Reviews

“The R1150GS is more of an evolution than a new motorcycle, but there are some very useful improvements to it. Therefore it is certainly better than the R1100, although a few additional changes could have been made. "

- Alan Dowds : Motorcycles

“The zenith has already been reached with 84 hp, which is definitely enough for the rapid cross-country flight. Which makes it easy to get over the boxer's non-intoxicating maneuverability. At 7000 rpm, the air is out, a thousand revolutions later it is finally time to go. The BMW designers do not want to expose the complicated valve control to higher speeds. "

- Werner Koch : Motorrad , issue 01/2002

“The 1150 boxer is considered to be robust and can easily crack the 100,000 kilometer hurdle with good care. The maximum problem is a series spread - typical for BMW. Shift shocks from the transmission, vibration behavior, constant speed jolts and noises from the drive train can be more pronounced than usual on some machines. "
