The BMW R 1100 R is a motorcycle from the vehicle manufacturer BMW with an air-oil-cooled two-cylinder boxer engine . The naked bike has several sister models of similar construction, such as the touring athlete R 1100 RS and the touring tourer R 1100 RT . From 1994 to the end of production in 1999, 53,685 units of the roadster were built at the BMW plant in Berlin .
construction
The chassis and engine are identical to the BMW R 1100 GS , but the R has a steering damper due to the lower front wheel load. The front brake comes from the R 1100 RS. In spring 1997 the R 1100 R received a new cockpit with a more pleasing design and a larger headlight.
The two cylinders of the boxer engine have a bore of Ø 99 mm. The pistons have a stroke of 70 mm with a compression ratio of 10.3: 1.
The wheel suspension was implemented by a Telelever at the front and a Paralever at the rear . In Germany, for insurance reasons, in addition to the 59 kW version, a version with 57 kW (78 hp) that was slightly throttled via the air filter was also offered. The internal model code is 259R. The tires are 120/70 ZR 17 at the front and 160/60 ZR 18 at the rear. Wire-spoke wheels are available on request (other wheel sizes: front 110/80 ZR 18, rear 150/70 ZR 17). A maximum of 215 kg may be loaded.
fuel
The average fuel consumption is 5.6 liters per 100 km at a speed of 120 km / h. The fuel tank has a volume of 21 liters, which enables a maximum range of approx. 350 km. The manufacturer recommends using unleaded petrol with a knock resistance of at least 95 octane .
General
The R 1100 R replaced the R 100 R in the 1994 model year . The motorcycle is optionally equipped with an anti-lock braking system. The cost price was 16,500 DM.
By model year 2001, the R 1100 R has been through the R 1150 R replaced.
criticism
“Anyone who has ever scurried down winding country roads in a roadster without any effort will be puzzled as to how something like this is possible. Because even the GS looks old compared to the youngest Bayern offspring: power without end, sufficient lean angle, but above all handling that clearly outshines even the famous old boxers, now reminiscent of tractors, in its effortlessness and agility .
