Previous model BMW R 1100 S.

The BMW R 1200 S is a motorcycle from the vehicle manufacturer BMW , which was manufactured from 2006 to 2008 at the BMW plant in Berlin in Spandau .

The R 1200 S is the direct successor to the BMW R 1100 S , which was marketed as a so-called sports boxer, but is still suitable for travel. The R 1200 S, on the other hand, is designed more as a super sports car. The pillion seat is only suitable for short journeys. In the meantime, however, there is the option of attaching pannier racks and BMW sports cases.

BMW stopped production in early 2008. The high-end version HP2 Sport , produced from 2007 to 2010, differs significantly from the R1200S in terms of price and features.

Compared to the good sales figures and the long construction period of the predecessor R 1100 S, the R 1200 S can only be regarded as moderately successful. The motorcycle was designed too sporty for the more comfort-oriented BMW riders. The concept did not appeal to customers of Japanese or Italian super athletes.

construction

drive

The air and oil-cooled boxer engine is installed lengthways and generates a nominal output of 90 kW (122 hp) at a speed of 8250 min −1 and a torque of 112 Nm at 6800 min −1 from two cylinders with a displacement of 1170 cm³ . Each cylinder head has a chain-driven camshaft which controls two intake and two exhaust valves via rocker arms. The cylinders have a bore of 101 mm in diameter, the pistons have a stroke of 73 mm with a compression ratio of 12.5: 1. The four-stroke engine has digital engine management and wet sump pressure circulation lubrication.

The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 2.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 243 km / h.

Power transmission

The primary drive takes place via gears. The power separation is done by a hydraulically operated single- disk dry clutch , the transmission is a claw-shifted six-speed gearbox with helical gearing . The secondary drive takes place via a cardan shaft with a torque support known as a Paralever . A central balancer shaft reduces disruptive vibrations.

Fuel supply

The fuel is injected electronically via the intake manifold. Each cylinder is ignited by two spark plugs. The manufacturer recommends using petrol with a knock resistance of at least 95 octane. The average fuel consumption is 5.5 liters per 100 km at a speed of 120 km / h. The fuel tank has a volume of 17 liters, of which 4 liters are in reserve.

The muffler of the exhaust system hangs under the seat. The exhaust gas aftertreatment is carried out by a regulated three-way catalytic converter and meets the Euro-3 emissions standard .

landing gear

The three-part tubular space frame is made up of a front, middle and rear frame. The unit of engine and transmission is load-bearing and supports the front wheel guidance with Telelever . The front frame is made of cast aluminum, the rear frame is made of steel. The front Telelever fork has a 35 mm standpipe diameter and 120 mm travel. The rear single-sided swing arm made of aluminum with Paralever torque support has a central spring strut and 135 mm travel. The spring preload is hydraulically adjustable, the rebound stage is continuously adjustable. Optionally, a sports suspension with Öhlins struts at the front and rear could be ordered from the factory. The motorcycle has cast aluminum wheels, the rim size is 3.50 × 17 at the front and 5.50 × 17 at the rear (optional 6.00x17). Two four-piston fixed-calliper disc brakes with a diameter of 320 mm act on the front wheel, while a two-piston floating calliper brake with a diameter of 265 mm acts at the rear. When ready to drive, the motorcycle weighs 213 kg. The maximum payload is 197 kg. An anti-lock braking system that could be switched off was optionally available.

Reviews

“Down-to-earth, robust driving characteristics with all handiness and steering precision as well as a high level of comfort. It is sporty, no doubt about it, but first and foremost it remains a motorcycle for the country road, where balance and stability are more important than the capricious handling of a short, super-light tenth of a second file, which can easily be irritated by bumps. "

- Ralf Schneider : Motorcycle

“A motorcycle like a firm handshake, full of character, emotional, with good performance, low fuel consumption, balanced and perfect for country road surfing. This cannot be tarnished by the points of criticism described, which only really matter if one expects a full, high-revving motorcycle from below, free of holes and with little vibration. "
