The BMW R 80 GS is an all-terrain motorcycle from the vehicle manufacturer BMW . 11,375 units of the Enduro were produced at the BMW plant in Berlin in Spandau from 1987 to 1994.

history

The R 80 GS was the successor to the BMW R 80 G / S (with a slash) built from 1980 to 1987 , the most powerful enduro at the time and the first touring enduro . Compared to this model, the handling has been improved by the newly designed double-articulated swing arm (BMW Paralever ). The cardan-related load change reactions ( keyword: rubber cow ) could largely be eliminated. At the same time, a stronger brake system was installed with an improved front fork. The newly developed cross-spoke wheels made it possible to combine tubeless tires with spoke wheels. The engine characteristics have been improved while maintaining the same maximum output by changing the exhaust system in favor of a higher torque.

Technical specifications

drive

The air-cooled two-cylinder engine generates a nominal output of 37 kW (50 hp) and a maximum torque of 61 Nm at a speed of 3750 min −1 from a displacement of 797.5 cm³ . The horizontally installed boxer engine has a bore of 84.8 mm and a stroke of 70.6 mm. Each cylinder head has an inlet and outlet valve ( OHV valve control ) controlled by tappets , bumpers and rocker arms . The four-stroke engine has a compression ratio of 8.2: 1 and a mixture preparation via two constant pressure carburettors of the type Bing 64/32/349 - 64/32/350. The engine lubrication is a pressure circulation lubrication with a wet sump.

Power transmission

The dry single-disc clutch has a geared disc spring. The claw-shift five-speed gearbox with ratchet-foot gearshift has a gear ratio of 4.4 / 2.86 / 2.07 / 1.67 / 1.50: 1. The rear wheel ratio on the secondary drive is 1: 3.2 (bevel / ring gear 10/32 teeth).

Electrical system

The contactless electronic ignition comes from Bosch . The Bosch alternator has an output of 280 watts . The starter type Valeo DR6A has an output of 700 W. The spark plugs are approved types Bosch W7DC, Beru 14-7DU and Champion N9YC.

landing gear

The chassis is based on a double loop frame made of steel tubes with a screwed-on rear section. The front wheel is guided by a telescopic fork with hydraulic shock absorbers and decelerated by a single-disc brake with a diameter of 285 mm. The rear wheel is sprung by a single-sided swing arm with torque support and Paralever and decelerated by a simplex drum brake with a diameter of 200 mm. The suspension travel is 225 mm at the front and 180 mm at the rear. The tires are specified as follows:

  • Front rim 1.85 × 21 MTH 2
  • Rear rim 2.50 × 17 MTH 2
  • Front tires 90/90 21 S.
  • Rear tires 130/80 17 S.

The empty weight when fully fueled is 210 kg, the permissible total weight 420 kg. The fuel consumption is 4.7 liters per 100 km at a constant 90 km / h. The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 168 km / h. The selling price was DM 10,950 .

Facelift

In the middle of this construction period there was another facelift, in which the small handlebar-mounted instrumentation was replaced by a frame-mounted cladding. The rev counter, which was previously available as an option, was included in the standard equipment. By changing the tank cap, the tank volume fell from 26 to 24 liters in 1990. The light switch that was previously integrated in the ignition lock was relocated to the right hand grip and the direction indicator was changed. The toggle switch on the left handle has been replaced by three push buttons (for right, left and reset).

In 1996 the special model R 80 GS Basic was produced again, which was based on the look of the original R 80 G / S and was the last two-valve boxer engine from BMW. Production stopped on December 19, 1996.

Motorcycles with comparable characteristics at that time were the Yamaha XT 600 and the Honda XL 600 .
