The BMW R 1150 RT is a fully faired motorcycle from the BMW brand with a two-cylinder boxer engine . The tourer was presented on January 12, 2001 as the successor to the BMW R 1100 RT and manufactured at the BMW plant in Berlin in Spandau from 2001 to 2004.

The motorcycle has several mechanically similar sister models with largely identical engines and different chassis designs and equipment. Parallel models are the naked bike R 1150 R , the athlete R 1150 RS and the travel enduro R 1150 GS .

General

The R 1150 RT replaced the R 1100 RT with the 2001 model year . In addition to the design of the front panel, changes were mainly made under the plastic cover. The engine output was slightly increased from 66 to 70 kW (90 to 95 PS), the displacement also experienced a marginal increase from 1085 cm³ to 1130 cm³.

With this RT, a new brake technology was introduced into the boxer range. The previously installed ABS II was replaced by the integral ABS, which was available in two versions, as a partial and a fully integral ABS. The RT initially came from the factory with the fully integrated version, in which both wheels are always braked, regardless of whether the hand or foot brake is operated. Only at the end of production in 2004 was there a special model in sapphire black and with chrome parts, which was equipped with partial ABS integral brakes. Most of the official vehicles were also produced with partially integral parts. With the parallel boxer models, the anti-lock braking system had to be ordered separately and, depending on the model, was only available as a partially integral ABS.

BMW modified the chassis , making the 281 kg motorcycle more manageable than its predecessor. For the first time, a display of the optionally available radio was mounted in the cockpit, which with this motorcycle model also replaced the predecessor that was already used in the old R and K series. In the course of the facelift, the sensitive footbrake was somewhat disarmed (model year 2002) and the engine was equipped with a double ignition (model year 2003).

In the 2005 model year, the R 1150 RT was replaced by the R 1200 RT (K26).

Technical specifications

engine

The air and oil-cooled two-cylinder boxer engine with wet sump pressure circulation lubrication is installed lengthways and generates a nominal output of 70 kW (95 hp). The two cylinders have a bore of 101 mm in diameter and 70.5 mm in stroke. The two intake and two exhaust valves are actuated by an overhead, chain-driven camshaft via rocker arms. The four-stroke engine with a compression ratio of 11.3: 1 has electronic intake manifold injection and transistor ignition and a regulated three-way catalytic converter , which are controlled by a digital Motronic MA 2.4. The 12 volt starter battery has a capacity of 19 Ah , the alternator generates an electrical output of 700 watts.

The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.3 seconds and reaches a top speed of 206 km / h.

Power transmission

As a primary drive , serve gears as a secondary drive a double universal joint shaft ( Paralever - Kardan ). The single-disc dry clutch is operated hydraulically. The transmission has six gears, with sixth gear being designed as a long overdrive gear , in contrast to the sister models R 1150 RS and R 1150 GS .

landing gear

The motor-gear unit is designed to be load-bearing and supports the front wheel guidance ( Telelever ). The front frame is made of cast aluminum , the rear frame is made of steel. The front Telelever fork has a 35 mm stanchion diameter and 120 mm suspension travel, the rear aluminum single- sided swing arm with Paralever torque support has a central spring strut and 135 mm suspension travel. The spring preload is hydraulically adjustable, the rebound stage is continuously adjustable. The motorcycle has cast wheels made of light alloy, the rim size is 3.50 × 17 at the front and 5.00 × 17 at the rear. Two four-piston fixed-caliper disc brakes with a diameter of 320 mm decelerate on the front wheel , while a two-piston floating caliper brake with a diameter of 276 mm acts at the rear . The tires are 120/70 ZR 17 at the front and 170/60 ZR 17 at the rear. The motorcycle weighs 281 kg when ready to drive and the maximum payload is 214 kg.

Fuel supply

The fuel tank has a capacity of 25.2 liters. The average fuel consumption is 5.5 liters per 100 km at a speed of 120 km / h. The manufacturer recommends using petrol with a knock resistance of at least 95 octane.

Tourers with comparable characteristics are Ducati ST3 , Honda ST1100 Pan European , Moto Guzzi Norge 1200 , Triumph Sprint ST and Yamaha FJR1300 .

criticism

“If you are traveling in pairs and with a lot of luggage, you should not be afraid of switching work (that easily comes off your feet) or revs for rapid acceleration. Half a ton is an inert mass. From around 4500 tours, unfortunately, vibrations spread that tingle right into the rear footrests. "
