The BMW R 1100 S is a motorcycle from the manufacturer BMW .

The motorcycle, marketed as a sports boxer, was presented on September 12, 1998, has an output of 98 hp and was replaced by the BMW R 1200 S in 2006 . BMW called this motorcycle the first BMW super sports car in over 50 years. In fact, there have been World Championships (Boxer Cups) with this type. The motorcycle was built at the BMW plant in Berlin in Spandau .

technology

The three-part frame consists of a front frame and a welded main frame made of aluminum and a rear frame made of steel. The engine is load-bearing. The air and oil-cooled boxer engine with two horizontally opposed cylinders generates a nominal output of 72.3 kW (98 hp). The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 226 km / h. Each cylinder head has four valves that control a “half-height” camshaft . The two cylinders have a bore of 99 mm in diameter, the pistons have a stroke of 70.5 mm with a compression ratio of 11.3: 1. The power is transmitted by means of a hydraulically operated single-disk dry clutch , a 6-speed gearbox and a cardan drive . The silencers of the performance-optimized exhaust system are located under the seat. The motorcycle has a three-way catalytic converter and the Motronic engine control (MA 2.4) from Bosch with petrol injection as standard .

The manufacturer recommends using petrol with a knock resistance of at least 95 octane. Consumption at a constant 90 km / h is 4.3 and at 120 km / h 5.2 liters of fuel per 100 km. The fuel tank holds 18 liters, of which 4 liters are in reserve. The ready-to-drive motorcycle weighs 229 kg, the maximum payload is 221 kg. The tires are 120/70 ZR 17 at the front and 170/60 ZR 17 at the rear (special equipment: 180/55 ZR 17).

Motorcycles with comparable characteristics are Benelli Tornado Tre 1130, Ducati GT 1000 and Honda CBF 1000 .

criticism

“Compared to its weaker counterparts, it seems less powerful in the lower and middle speed range. From around 6000 / min he bites all the more violently, however, at 7500 / min he suffers from pronounced listlessness. Unfortunately, the urge for higher things goes hand in hand with a loss of smoothness: violent vibrations, which can be felt primarily in the footrests, dampen the desire for high continuous revs. The fun of low-speed hum is not unclouded either: when the throttle valve is opened to the minimum, there is pronounced constant jerking.
