The BMW R 1150 R Rockster is an undisguised motorcycle from the BMW brand with a two-cylinder boxer engine . In September 2002 the naked bike was presented as a design study for the first time at the Intermot motorcycle fair in Munich . Series production at the BMW plant in Berlin in Spandau began in 2003, and production was discontinued at the end of the 2005 model year.

General

The Rockster has several mechanically similar sister models with largely identical engines and different chassis designs, cladding and equipment. The parallel models from the BMW 1150 Boxer series include the naked bike R 1150 R , the tourer R 1150 RS , R 1150 ST , R 1150 RT and the travel enduro R 1150 GS .

The R 1150 R Rockster was derived from the R 1150 R model in 2003 . The fork, fittings and rims (5.5 "rear rim with 180/55 ZR 17 tires) come from the R 1100 S , the double headlights from the R 1150 GS . Other differences between the Rockster and the R 1150 R are:

  • Frame / valve cover / fork ferro (blue) - except 2005 model
  • black engine block
  • Steering head angle 63.1 °
  • Steel braided lines for brakes and clutch
  • electronic speedometer
  • rev counter with white background
  • automatic switch-off of the direction indicator
  • 40 mm wider handlebar
  • Double ignition (later R1150R however also have this)
  • shorter gear ratio (higher speed level)

Technical specifications

engine

The air and oil-cooled boxer engine is installed lengthways and generates a nominal output of 64 kW (87 hp) from two cylinders . Each cylinder head has a chain-driven camshaft which controls two intake and two exhaust valves via rocker arms . The two horizontal cylinders have a 101 mm diameter bore . The pistons have a stroke of 70.5 mm with a compression ratio of 10.3: 1. The four-stroke engine has digital engine management and wet sump pressure circulation lubrication. The exhaust gas aftertreatment is carried out by a regulated three-way catalytic converter and falls below the limit values of the Euro 2 emissions standard . Power is supplied by a 12 volt starter battery with a capacity of 19  ampere hours and an alternator with an output of 700 watts.

Fuel supply

The engine has intake manifold injection and is designed to run on premium petrol (95 RON). Each cylinder is ignited by two transistor-controlled spark plugs . The average fuel consumption is 5.5 liters per 100 km at a speed of 120 km / h. The fuel tank has a volume of 20.5 liters.

Power transmission

The power is transmitted via a hydraulically operated single-disc dry clutch located between the engine and transmission housing . The transmission with separate oil filling has six gears. The secondary drive takes place via a double cardan shaft. The single- sided swing arm , which is guided on the right side of the rear wheel, has a torque support known as a Paralever to reduce the effects of the cardan drive on the rear wheel suspension.

landing gear

The unit of engine and transmission is load-bearing and supports the trailing arm of the ( Telelever ) front wheel guide. The front frame is made of cast aluminum , the rear frame is made of steel. The Telelever fork has a 35 mm standpipe diameter and 120 mm travel. The rear single- sided swing arm made of aluminum with Paralever torque support has a central spring strut and 135 mm travel. The spring preload is hydraulically adjustable, the rebound stage is continuously adjustable. The motorcycle has cast wheels made of light metal, the rim size is 3.50 × 17 at the front and 5.50 × 17 at the rear. Two four-piston fixed-caliper disc brakes with a diameter of 320 mm decelerate on the front wheel , while a two-piston floating caliper brake with a diameter of 276 mm acts at the rear . When ready to drive, the motorcycle weighs 238 kg. The maximum payload is 214 kg. The front tires are 120/70 ZR 17 and rear 180/55 ZR 17.

Colors and editions

The primer paint on the fuel tank and trim is matt black. The frame of the Rockster is ferro blue. Wind deflectors, rims and cladding were initially offered in the combination colors citrus and copper. The special model "Edition 80" was released in 2003 for the 80th anniversary of BMW in the colors alpine white / black. It was sold in a limited edition of 2003 vehicles. There is a badge with the serial number ("n from 2003") on the front frame. In the 2005 model year, the combination color slate gray was also offered. This color combination is unofficially known as the "Last Edition".

review

“The single-seater basic version, which costs 10,850 euros, is a BMW for two types of motorcyclist. First, for people who actually never liked BMW - they may have to relearn. Second, for people who finally want a BMW that first appeals to the heart and stomach and only then appeals to the mind. "

- Klaus Herder : bma 04/2005

“Somehow you can't get rid of the feeling that the BMW designers had previously celebrated a lavish party when they drew the new R 1150 R Rockster. Crouched like a panther ready to jump, she squints aggressively from the unevenly large bulging eyes, suggesting pure streetfighter feeling. In truth, it is just as suitable for everyday use and decent as any other BMW. "

Trivia

  • The actor Ben Affleck escapes in the feature film Paycheck - The Reckoning from 2003 together with the actress Uma Thurman with a black and copper rockster. The engine sound that has been brought in does not correspond to that of the BMW.
