The BMW K 1200 GT is a motorcycle from the German manufacturer BMW AG . The sports tourer is characterized by a powerful engine, good wind protection, comfortable seating position and a good chassis. GT stands for Grand Tourismo and, according to BMW, symbolizes cultivated sportiness combined with a high level of touring comfort for the crew. The model codes of the two generations are K41 and K44.

1st generation (K41, 2002-2005)

Strictly speaking, there are two completely different motorcycles of the BMW K 1200 GT. The first version was presented at Intermot 2002. This was based on the practically identical BMW K 1200 RS ; Among other things, the engine, the chassis and the brakes are identical to those of the RS. The most important differences to the BMW K 1200 RS are: A (electrically adjustable) higher windshield, widenings on the body in the hand and leg area, as well as side cases painted in the body color as standard. In addition, the background noise is more subtle than on the RS. Other plus points: more seating comfort thanks to the better placed handlebar halves and a higher seat bench that enables a more comfortable knee angle.

This version had the longitudinally built in-line four-cylinder engine (called the Flying Brick ) and was delivered with integral ABS from FTE automotive as standard . The engine is a successor to the K 100 engine from 1983 with modern technology such as B. Manifold injection, G-Kat, exemplary low emission values and respectable consumption values (6 liters per 100 km).

Production stopped in 2005.

criticism

“A real Langhuber. And a steam engine straight out of a picture book. Presses off like an ox from idle and reacts silky smooth to commands from the accelerator hand, which keeps load change reactions within surprisingly pleasant limits. On the country road, everything happens in the range between 3000 and 5000 rpm and gears five and six, an impressive demonstration of power. Over its entire speed range, the four-cylinder articulates itself quite robustly, especially the engine of the GT rattles heartily. Fortunately, the driver notices very little of the sometimes hefty vibrations, because the drive unit and the cardan in the aluminum bridge frame are completely made of rubber. Although it increases the weight, it is easy on the crew's nerves, especially in the longer term, for which a K was designed in every respect. For the big tour.

What always astonishes is less the handiness of these steamers - considering the high weight, it is on an average level - but the neutrality with which a K takes even tight corners. Everything is easy in the truest sense of the word, coupling is child's play and - thanks to the brake booster - also vehement deceleration. Of course, the BMWs feel most comfortable on fast, well-developed routes when they can really flex their muscles. But even bumpy passes storm these chunks with ease. Signs that the K are well balanced. And that BMW has chosen a formidable first tire: Bridgestone BT 020, in the special specification CC. With this, the two drive - for their heavyweight class - with astonishing accuracy and only stand up minimally when braking hard in lean angles. And repeatedly forced a big grin from their drivers. 2nd generation (K44, 2006–2008)

The K 1200 GT delivered from 2006 is a completely new motorcycle. Only the name and the philosophy behind it Grand Tourismo have remained . Behind the much more angular body is the transversely installed four-cylinder engine from the K 1200 S or K 1200 R series, which is designed for more torque and less peak performance. This model also has the partially integral ABS from Continental Teves (without brake booster ).

The second generation of the K 1200 GT was replaced by the BMW K 1300 GT at the end of 2008 .
