The BMW R 35 was a touring motorcycle of the 350 cm³ class from the German motorcycle manufacturer BMW , which was built from 1937.

history

On February 20, 1937, BMW presented the R 35 to the public for the first time at the German Motor Show in Berlin .

development

The R 35 was designed as the successor to the hard-to-sell BMW R 3 and the BMW R 4 built since 1931 . The engine housing was taken over from the R 4 , the cylinder head was structurally the same as that of the R 3 . BMW last used a pressed steel double loop frame without rear suspension, the telescopic fork on the front wheel managed without hydraulic damping.

Production until 1940

The R 35 was developed with a view to use by authorities, the police and, above all, the military. It was considered to be extremely robust, tough and exceptionally reliable. Production began in Munich in 1937 . Because of the concentration of aircraft engine development in Munich, the entire motorcycle production was relocated to the then BMW plant in Eisenach , Thuringia , during World War II . In 1940 production was stopped because it no longer met the requirements of the Wehrmacht .

Post war production

After the Second World War, the Eisenach BMW plant was significantly destroyed, but the production machines were stored in the surrounding shafts of the potash mines in good time along with the stocks of parts. This also included sets of parts for around 1000 BMW R 35s, but without a frame.

On July 3, 1945 Eisenach became part of the Soviet occupation zone . BMW motorcycles were highly regarded by the Soviets (the M72 was built according to plans for the BMW R 71 ), and so orders were given to make motorcycles from the stored parts. With the order number 93 for "ensuring the bringing out of the new passenger cars and motorcycles in the vehicle and machine factory Thuringia", the production for reparations to the Soviet Union was resumed in November 1945 . 3000 cars of the type "321" and motorcycles of the type "R 35" were required . The plan for 1945 specified the production of 70 motorcycles, but only 16 were actually produced.

On September 15, 1946, the plant was incorporated into the Soviet joint-stock company Awtowelo . No reliable production figures are available for the years 1946 to 1948. In 1949, 4,250 machines were produced. At first only authorities and the FDJ -Interessengemeinschaft Motorsport (from 1952 Society for Sport and Technology ) were supplied with these vehicles - still provided with the BMW emblem; from 1949 they were also available for private customers.

Attempts were made to supply Western European markets as well. The BMW cars and motorcycles from East German production were a thorn in the side of BMW in Munich (their own production started slowly), so that a legal dispute arose. With the judgment of the Düsseldorf Regional Court of November 17, 1950, confiscations threatened to endanger foreign exchange if Eisenach continued to produce under the BMW name.

From BMW was therefore EMW : Eisenacher engine plant ; the white and blue propeller became a white and red company emblem. In 1951, the plant was incorporated into the IFA network as a state-owned company , and by then 17,000 vehicles had already left the plant. In 1953 the plant was renamed VEB Automobilwerk Eisenach .

The BMW R 35 is the basis of the EMW R 35, which was built in the later GDR until 1955 .

technology

The engine is similar to the BMW R 4 with a smaller cylinder bore. The cylinder head and the pressed steel frame, which were also used in the last series of the R 4, were borrowed from the BMW R 3 .

The R 35 replaced the R 4 . The power was increased by 2 HP and the displacement was modified to 350 cm³. A dry clutch and a manual four-speed gearbox together with the cardan form the drive. The chassis consists of a sheet steel frame without rear suspension, the front wheel has a new guide with a telescopic fork.
