The BMW R 100 RS Classic is a motorcycle model produced by the BMW company from 1986 to 1989 in a number of 6081 .

The motorcycles with the designation BMW R 100 RS and BMW R 100 RT ("Classic" or with the note of the last series) are technically modified new editions in the style of the previously discontinued models of the so-called "Strich-Sieben" series from the 1970s ( see BMW R 100 RS ), but with modernized technology and features of the two-valve models manufactured according to the "dash-seven" series.

background

After the new appearance of the modern boxer designs with four-valve technology (series R 850 / R 1100), there were many protests among customers because of the discontinuation of the air-cooled two-valve boxer based on the "old" concept. For a few years, BMW showed an understanding and relaunched the machines with the old engine concept and an (essentially) similar appearance, so to speak as " nostalgic models". These were then manufactured together with the K series with water-cooled in-line engines and the already newly launched R series as the third motorcycle series at that time at the BMW plant in Spandau under the type code 0455.

construction

Stefan Pachernegg, the chief developer of BMW, described the development goal as follows: "The adoption of as many R80 parts as possible plus more displacement." The BMW R 80 has the double loop frame made of tubular steel with single-sided swing arm, the 18-inch front wheel, the telescopic fork, the bench and the rear taken over. The crank drive , clutch and transmission come from the engine of the R80 . The two cylinder heads and their valve guides have been revised and the cylinder bore widened from 84.8 to 94 mm. With a reduced 32-millimeter carburettor, smaller valves and a compression ratio reduced to 8.45: 1 , the rated output fell from 70 to 60 hp.

After series production ended at the end of 1989, 200 black-painted motorcycles from stocks were finally assembled and sold in 1992.

Differences to the "Strich-Sieben" series

Differences to the "Strich-Sieben" series are the one-sided rear swing arm, the smaller wheels and the other front wheel brakes. The “Classic” models all have aluminum wheels; the “dash-seven” motorcycles, on the other hand, have partly steel-spoke wheels or aluminum wheels of larger diameter. This makes the new edition look a bit more compact, but is not lighter than the "old" models.

In order not to compete with the newer motorcycles of the R 850 and R 1100 series, the engine output of the new editions was limited to 60 hp. The frame was also brought up to date, it corresponded to that of the Monolever models introduced in the 1985 model year. However, the newly launched motorcycle models no longer achieved the expected acceptance on the market and were discontinued before 1997.

The air-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke piston engine of the model with lower side, chain driven camshaft and the two tappets, pushrods and rocker arms actuated valves obtained at a capacity of around 980  cc a nominal power of 44 kW (60 HP) at a speed of 6,500 min -1 . The stroke is 70.6 mm. The mixture formation with the normal gasoline takes place via constant pressure carburetor ; the ignition is transistor-controlled . Power is transmitted to the rear wheel via a five-speed gearbox and cardan shaft .

The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 5.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 186 km / h.

landing gear

The chassis is based on a double loop frame made of steel tubes, has a telescopic fork at the front and a single-sided swing arm suspended with a mono strut at the rear. The suspension strut of the single-sided swing arm is adjustable in terms of the spring base and rebound damping. The two dip tubes of the telescopic fork have a diameter of 41 mm. Two disc brakes with two-piston fixed calipers are installed at the front and a drum brake at the rear. The tires are 90 / 90-18 at the front and 120 / 90-18 at the rear. When fully fueled, the motorcycle weighs 228 kg, the gross vehicle weight is stated as 465 kg.

The average consumption is 7.5 liters of regular petrol per 100 km. The fuel tank holds 22 liters of fuel. The theoretical range is 293 km.
