BMW R 24
The R 24 model released in 1948 was the first post-war model in the single-cylinder series, an almost unchanged successor to the R 23 .
history
After the Second World War, BMW had no design drawings of the pre-war BMW R 23 model in Munich - motorcycle production was outsourced to Eisenach in 1942. An R 23 was then dismantled and measured down to the last screw and the construction drawings were put together by the summer of 1947.
On March 11, 1948, BMW presented the R 24 at the 18th Salon International Automobile et Moto Cycle in Geneva; however, BMW has not yet been able to make a statement about the start of production.
“Unfortunately, due to the reparation obligations imposed on BMW, the appealing machine cannot yet be delivered. However, the company hopes to be able to use the delivery at the beginning / middle of next year [1949] after the necessary machinery has been re-acquired. "
BMW still managed to start series production in 1948. The first motorcycle was manufactured on December 14, 1948, and in May 1949 the 1,000th R 24 rolled off the production line.
BMW produced a total of 12,020 R 24s until the motorcycle was replaced by the BMW R 25 in May 1950 .
technology
engine
The engine with overhead valves (OHV valve control) in the fully encapsulated valve train developed 12 hp.
drive
The R 24 had a manual or foot-shifting four-speed gearbox with a drive shaft on the right-hand side of the unsprung rear wheel.
BMW referred to the power transmission from the gearbox to the rear wheel as a "cardan drive", the drive shaft as a "cardan shaft" and the gearbox on the rear wheel as a "cardan housing" - technically correct it was only a shaft drive of the rear wheel, as there were no cardan joints.
landing gear
The chassis is a tubular steel frame without rear suspension. The front wheel has a guide with a telescopic fork .
