BMW i is a sub-brand of the car manufacturer BMW founded in 2010 , under which the car manufacturer's electric or partially electric models have been offered since 2013 . So far, two concept vehicles have been launched on the market as series vehicles, the BMW i3 and the BMW i8 ; these are based on sustainability requirements. Four more concepts, the i1, i4, i5 and i9 have been announced. The BMW i models are produced at the BMW plant in Leipzig . The plant is to be expanded into a competence center for electromobility in the BMW Group.

In addition, all of the BMW Group's mobility services are bundled at BMW i. These include B. DriveNow , ParkNow and BMW i Ventures .

In April 2016 it was decided that BMW i would in future increasingly specialize in autonomous vehicles.

In 2017, BMW i then presented the Vision dynamics study at the IAA in the size of the 3-series BMW, which is to be built as the i4 from 2021.

In 2018, the all-electric BMW Concept iX3 based on the X3 was shown at Auto China in Beijing and at Mondial de l'Automobile in Paris , which includes the introduction of the fifth generation of electric drive technology. In addition, the electric motor should get by without rare earths . In future, the vehicle architectures from BMW should also be able to use electric drives; all-electric BMWs will then be called BMW i . The iNext SUV study was also presented at the Mondial de l'Automobile . The series model is also due to appear here in 2021.

At the Geneva Motor Show 2020, BMW is showing the Concept i4 study , which should be close to series production. It has a 390 kW / 530 PS electric motor; with the 80 kWh battery a range of 600 km is specified. The battery was new and developed in-house. The vehicle offers different driving modes that are associated with different sounds. For this purpose, BMW signed the film composer Hans Zimmer .

At the IAA 2019, an X5 with fuel cell was presented as i Hydrogen Next . The vehicle is to be built in small series in 2022. BMW has been testing the fuel cell drive in a test fleet of the 5 Series GT since 2015 .

prehistory

The Project i was to develop a development project by BMW with the goal of lightweight and environmentally friendly electric cars for urban transport. Among other things, this was intended to meet the future mobility needs of city dwellers. There has been a sustainability officer since 2008.

The "Project i" consisted of three phases. In a first phase, the Mini E was tested in a field test. The second phase followed in 2012 was a test with the ActiveE , in whose development the first results of the first phase were processed. The final phase was the development of the i3 and i8 .

The BMW i8 is a sports car with a hybrid drive . The electric drive with 96 kW (131 PS) is located on the front axle. The rear axle is powered by an exhaust gas-charged 1.5-liter three-cylinder petrol engine with a maximum output of 170 kW (231 hp) and a torque of up to 320 Nm.

BMW i agents

The BMW i products and services were sold through a multi-sales channel until 2018. This means that there was an online sales platform in addition to the 47 BMW i agents (Germany). As of January 2018, the i series was integrated into the normal BMW sales platform, which meant that sales agents were no longer required.
