The Sauer Valley Cycle Path is a cycle path along the German-Luxembourg border river Sauer and connects the mouth of the Moselle at Wasserbillig with the Luxembourg town of Ettelbrück at the confluence of the Alzette and Sauer rivers. The river cycle path leads through wetlands, vineyards and picturesque places. There is a cycle path on both banks to Echternacherbrück. On the German side it is signposted as the Sauer Valley Cycle Route and on the Luxembourg side as “Piste-Cyclable-de-la-Basse-Sûr”. From Echternacherbrück, the cycle path runs on Luxembourg territory (PC3, PC16) and leaves the border with the Sauer near Wallendorf. Here the Our flows into the Sauer and from here forms the German-Luxembourg border. The route is largely flat and is therefore also suitable for recreational cyclists.

Route Wasserbillig - Ettelbrück

Characteristic

Mostly flat route with smaller gradients. The route is mostly on its own asphalt paths, in Luxembourg mostly along the road. Only short sections lead over local roads. The route is indicated as suitable for recreational cyclists. The ADFC classifies them as follows:

  • Surface approx. 80% suitable for racing bikes, approx. 20% for touring bikes.
  • The difficulty is given as easy to medium (from easy 0–2%, medium 2–6%, difficult 6–10%, sporty> 10%).
  • The traffic load as "none to low" (from "none to low", moderate, high)

Wasserbillig - Echternach

The German Sauer Valley Cycle Route near Wintersdorf.

Wasserbillig can be reached by train. You can also get there via the Moselle cycle path , for example from Trier, which is about 13 km away. On the approx. 25 km long first section, which begins in Wasserbillig, you can choose between the German eastern and the Luxembourg western side of the Sauer. On the German side the cycle path is signposted with the cycle path logo "Sauertal-Radweg" and on the Luxembourg side as "Piste-Cyclable-de-la-Basse-Sûr" (PC3). Several bridges can be used to switch between the two routes.
On the German side, the cycle path is largely flat, only around Ralingen and between the towns of Minden and Echternacherbrück are slight climbs to be mastered. The route leads through the vineyard landscape from Wasserbillig via Langsur to Mesenich. Here the cycle path meets the route of the former Nims-Sauertalbahn and then partly follows it to Minden, where the Prüm flows into the Sauer. Mesenich is followed by the villages of Metzdorf and Wintersdorf. Between them, the bike path was "elevated" to a length of approx. 200 m to protect the wetland that was crossed. The Sauer now turns in a wide loop to the west and the route leads via Ralingen, Godendorf and Edingen to Minden. On this section the 336 m long, naturally illuminated Ralinger Tunnel from 1914 is passed through. In Minden there is a connection to the Prümtal-Radweg and from this to the city of Prüm the Eifel-Ardennen-Radweg , which crosses the entire Eifel in an east-west direction with its connecting paths. The last approx. 4 km on the German side of the Sauertal cycle path follow before the route in Echternacherbrück leads to Echternach on the opposite side to Luxembourg.
The Luxembourg cycle path PC3 starts at Wasserbillig train station, crosses the tracks and follows the banks of the Sauer in a northerly direction. Between Wasserbillig and Reisdorf, the route partly follows the route of the former Prinz-Heinrich-Bahn . Here the route often runs right next to the little to moderately traveled N10 . After the Sauer Valley Bridge has been crossed under the E44 motorway , the route reaches the former Moersdorf train station. Behind the village, the railway line changes to the side of the N10 facing away from the Sauer. The route leads via Born and Hinkel to Rosport, opposite Ralingen on the German side. Here, in addition to other places, the crossing over the Sauer is possible. After Steinheim, opposite the Prüm tributary in Minden, Echternach, with its imperial abbey and basilica, is well worth seeing.

Echternach - Ettelbruck

This approximately 35 km long section runs on Luxembourg territory and is signposted as PC3 as far as Reisdorf and as PC16 “Piste cyclable de la Sûre Moyenne” on the rest of the route. It is largely flat, but there are always smaller inclines to overcome, as the route is a little above the Sauer on the slope or the bike path leaves the embankment. After Echternach, the route continues on the railway line of the former Prinz-Heinrich-Bahn via Weilerbach to Bollendorf-Pont. Opposite on the German side of the Sauer is Bollendorf with its castle and other sights. The route continues along the Sauer via Dillingen to Wallendorf-Pont. In Wallendorf, on the other side of the Sauer, several Westwall bunkers can be visited. In Wallendorf the Our flows into the Sauer and forms the further border between Luxembourg and Germany. The PC3 now follows the Our, so you have to switch to the PC16 cycle route, which continues to follow the course of the Sauer. Via Reisdorf, the route leads past the old Moestroff train station to Bettendorf. Here the bike path separates from the railway line and on the bank path of the Sauer the route leads via Gilsdorf and Diekirch, where some interesting museums invite you to visit, to Ettelbrück. In Diekirch and Ettelbrück there is a rail connection to the city of Luxembourg and from there to Trier, back to the starting point in Wasserbillig.

Sights and culture

  • Wintersdorf : The Church of St. James the Elder was extensively rebuilt in 1901/02. It was based on the Romanesque style of the existing bell tower from the beginning of the 12th century.
  • Wallendorf : An intact bunker of the west wall that is freely accessible. There are over 300 soldiers lying in the local cemetery; many of them fell during the Battle of the Bulge .
  • Diekirch : National Military History Museum with exhibits on the Ardennes Offensive . There is also the National Museum of Historic Vehicles and the Museum of the History of the Brewery . Beer brewing has a long tradition in Diekirch. Today's brewery "Brasserie de Luxembourg" was founded in 1871 and is one of the most important industrial companies and employers in the municipality as well as the most popular beer brand in Luxembourg.

Connecting cycle paths

In Minden there is a connection to the Prümtal cycle path which leads north to the Prüm spring and on to Stadtkyll on the upper reaches of the Kyll . In the Prüm this crosses the Eifel-Ardennen cycle path . With the connection to the Moselle cycle path , the course of the Moselle between Metz and Koblenz is accessible via cycle paths. Starting from the Moselle cycle path, there is the possibility of well-developed cycle paths both in the direction of the Eifel to the valley of the Ahr and in the direction of the Hunsrück to the valley of the Nahe . For example the Kylltal and Maare-Mosel cycle path into the Eifel and the Nahe-Hunsrück-Mosel cycle path over the Hunsrück to the Nahe. In Luxembourg it is connected to the Luxembourg cycle path network .

Both endpoints of the cycle path can be reached by train. The Wasserbillig railway station is on the line Trier - Luxembourg served hourly, while Ettelbrück on the railway line Luxembourg-Spa located and Trier - to reach Luxembourg is. In addition, the towns of Ralingen, Minden, Irrel, Echternach and Bollendorf are served by the RegioRadler 441 bus (Trier - Bollendorf). This bus line operated by the Rhein-Mosel Verkehrsgesellschaft runs daily from April 1st to November 1st and has space for 8 bicycles.
