The Prümtal cycle path is a cycle path along the second longest river in the Eifel. From Stadtkyll the route leads to the headwaters of the Prüm and follows the river to where it flows into the Sauer near Minden . The Moselle can then be reached at Wasserbillig on the German-Luxembourg border via the Sauertal cycle path . The entire route is recommended for sporty drivers. On the section Prüm - Waxweiler, the cycle path runs on a former railway line, so this section is also suitable for families, recreational cyclists and skaters.

Route Stadtkyll - Minden an der Sauer

Characteristic

The Prümtal cycle path is marked in both directions with the cycle path logo and is led over asphalted or paved cycle paths as well as over quiet country roads. The ADFC stated that the touring bike was most suitable for 70% of the route. Its characteristics can be divided into three sections.

  • Stadtkyll - Prüm: This approx. 23 km long section starts at an altitude of 450  m above sea level. NN . It begins with an approx. 10 km long ascent, which starts with a moderate, then stronger incline to the headwaters of the Prüm at approx. 650  m above sea level. NN leads. Then it goes down on little-traveled back roads to Prüm, which is about 200 meters lower.
  • Prüm - Waxweiler: This approx. 18 km long section leads on the former railway line of the Westeifelbahn and the branch line Pronsfeld - Waxweiler . The section is asphalted and leads to Waxweiler with a slight incline without any climbs, which makes it particularly suitable for families with children, recreational cyclists and skaters.
  • Waxweiler - Minden an der Sauer: The last varied section is approx. 57 km long. There is no continuous connection along the Prüm between Waxweiler and Biersdorf (approx. 32 km). The route is guided over quiet country and district roads. However, the Prümtal is left and about 275 meters in altitude must be overcome when changing to the valley of the Ehlenzbach . The steepest ascent with a length of almost 3 km and sometimes over 10% is between Mauelermühle and L12. It leads in serpentines over an asphalt forest path. At Lambersberg the highest point is 534  m above sea level. NN reached. From now on it goes downhill on the L12 to Oberweiler. Then the L12 is left and the route leads over forest paths to the Bitburger lake at 250  m above sea level. NN . After the reservoir, the route follows the Prümtal again. Here it runs on its own partly newly built bike path over many bends with a few climbs and descents. The bike path ends at approx. 140  m above sea level. NN in Minden an der Sauer .

description

Stadtkyll - Prüm - Waxweiler

The Prümtal cycle path starts in Stadtkyll as a junction from the Kylltal cycle path and leads through the valley of the Wirft (a tributary of the Kyll ) up to Schönfeld and on to the boggy origin of the Prüm. Here in the forest area between Ormont and Reuth , the spring water of the Prüm collects, which the bike path follows from then on. The path leads on quiet side streets with little traffic through the villages of Neuendorf , Olzheim , Willwerath , Hermespand to Prüm, which is about 200 m lower. The city has a lot to offer in terms of history and culture. The founding of the monastery of Prüm Abbey dates back to 721. King Pippin gave the abbey parts of Christ's sandals, which were then given the name Saint Salvator (To the Most Holy Redeemer). Charlemagne had the "Golden Church", consecrated in 799, built to store the precious relic. After the disintegration of this church, construction of today's basilica began in 1712. From 1748 a new abbey building was added to the church according to the plans of the baroque master builder Balthasar Neumann . Both buildings were only completed in 1912. Since then they have shaped the cityscape of Prüm. In Prüm, the route meets the Eifel-Ardennes cycle path with which it uses the route of the former West Eifel Railway to Pronsfeld . When you reach the former Pronsfeld railway junction, you enter a place where railway history was written. The Westeifelbahn was opened in 1886 and supraregional destinations could be reached from the region. In 1907 the branch line to Waxweiler and Neuerburg was put into operation, making Pronsfeld a railway junction. In addition to regional development, the planners also had military goals in mind. During the First World War, the route for the transport of supplies to the Western Front was further expanded and during the construction of the West Wall (1936) the Pronsfeld station was one of the largest transshipment points for the construction material of the bunkers and barriers. Here the route branches off from the Eifel-Ardennen cycle path to the south and leads over the railway line of the former branch line Pronsfeld-Waxweiler . Before reaching Waxweiler, you will pass Lünebach and Kinzenburg .

Waxweiler - Minden

After Waxweiler, the cycle path leaves the Prüm valley, as there is no continuous connection here, and switches to the Ehlenzbach valley. To do this, however, an ascent with a gradient of more than 10% must be overcome before the L12 is reached, on which it then goes downhill back into the Prüm valley. The steepest ascent leads in serpentines over an asphalt forest path, which less experienced cyclists can cover by pushing. Take the L10 to Lascheid and then take the K194 district road to Plütscheid , before you reach the L12 at the industrial estate . You follow the cycle path to Oberweiler . Here it goes along the edge of the forest via Niederweiler to Biersdorf am See, which is located on the Bitburg reservoir . Only about 2 km away, on a tight loop of the Prüm, is Hamm Castle , one of the largest medieval fortifications in the Eifel. In the last section the Prüm presents itself as a typical low mountain range river. Short climbs and descents alternate on the winding route. The hilly route leads through forest and meadow sections and through small villages, each with its own character. These surprise us with various bridges and bank developments as well as ecclesiastical and secular monuments. It goes via Wißmannsdorf , Brecht and Oberweis to Bettingen which is dominated by a castle ruin. The route continues via Wettlingen and Peffingen to Holsthum with its castle and hop fields along the way. The “Irreller waterfalls” are located in Prümzurlay . From there you get to the “Water and Nature Adventure Path”, which leads as a circular route through the German-Luxembourg nature park and back to Irrel . On the way to Irrel, the route passes the Ferschweiler plateau with the Devil's Gorge . In Irrel, about 5 km before the mouth of the Prüm into the Sauer, the Prüm is reached by its largest tributary, the Nims . The Nimstal cycle path that ends here also reaches the route with it. The town of Irrel offers the medieval parish church with a late Gothic choir tower from 1510, the Westwall Museum on the Katzenkopf and the railway viaduct at the Irreler mill. The route then continues via Menningen to Minden . Here it ends on the Sauertal cycle path , which leads from Ettelbrück in Luxembourg to Wasserbilligerbrück on the Moselle .

Attractions

  • Stadtkyll : basilica; Local history museum, information center “Man and Nature”.
  • Pronsfeld : St. Remigius Church with the choir room and remains of the tower from the construction period around 1498. In order to remember the earlier importance of the Pronsfeld station (here the branch lines to Arzfeld / Neuerburg and to Waxweiler branch off from the main line of the Westeifelbahn )an old shunting locomotive was erected as a memorialat the former Pronsfeld station in 2006. The Eifelzoo Pronsfeld enables the observation of native and exotic animals as well as a ride with its own zoo train through the facilities.
  • Waxweiler : town center. With the Devonium Waxweiler, the Eifel has another geotouristic highlight. In the museum with its modern didactic concept, the world 400 million years ago comes to life in a playful way and can be literally understood. The past is linked to the present and future. This is how the earth is presented as it will appear in 50 million years.

Connecting cycle paths

The Prümtal-Radweg branches off from the Kylltal-Radweg in Stadtkyll and shares the route of the former Westeifelbahn with the Eifel-Ardennen-Radweg between Prüm and Pronsfeld . The Eifel-Ardennen-Radweg is a north-east connection through the Eifel and connects the Nürburgring with St. Vith in East Belgium. In Pronsfeld the Enztal-Radweg branches off and runs parallel to the route of the Prümtal -Radweg to join it again in Pfeffingen. Finally, the Prümtal cycle path ends on the Sauertal cycle path in Minden .
