The Eifel Zoo is a privately operated zoo located in Lünebach , a municipality in the Eifel district of Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate . There is room for around 400 animals on the 30 hectare site.

The zoo is located west of the B 410 , which leads from Lünebach to Pronsfeld , in the Bierbachtal. The Bierbach is a tributary of the Prüm .

history

The zoo was opened in 1972 by the Cologne entrepreneur Hans Wallpott (1927-2017) on the site of a former fish farm acquired in 1965.

In 2002, the flood-carrying brook affected the zoo. In 2007, Wallpott was seriously injured in the arm by the collar bear Mike.

As a result of a storm, the lower part of the zoo was flooded by the Bierbach on June 1, 2018. The last remaining collar bear Mike escaped from his enclosure. He was shot. Because of the confusing situation, the population was also warned of large cats that had escaped, but they had not left their enclosures.
