history
The town of Oberweis was first mentioned in a document in 798/799 in a deed of donation to the Echternach monastery . At that time, Oberweis was called Wis an der Prüm or, as in the Latin document, Wis quod situm est super fluvio Prumia . As early as the 9th century, Oberweis was described in Bitburg documents as belonging to a parish. During the Second World War , Oberweis was often the scene of the effects of the war. For example, Oberweis was bombed by American soldiers for the first time on September 15, 1944, as they suspected a special position due to trenches they had discovered in Oberweis. Many residents fled to villages further back and from October 1944 individual buildings were destroyed, such as the Gasper inn with the post on Ash Wednesday 1945, but also later individual civilians were killed by flying bombs. After the Second World War, Oberweis was first under US control, and shortly afterwards under French hands, before the Luxembourgers took over the occupation on December 15, 1945. On October 10, 1946, Luxembourg resigned from the post. In 2002 Oberweis celebrated its 1200th anniversary.
