About this picture

geography

The village is located in the South West Eifel , about 5 km south of the center of the district town of Bitburg. The municipality covers part of the so-called "Bitburger Gutland" and is crossed by the federal highway 257 . At 71.2%, a comparatively high proportion of the 5.46 km² area is used for agriculture, only 12.9% are forested. Within the local community, the altitude varies between 260 and 290  m above sea level. NHN .

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 893 in the Prümer Urbar . In the corridors “Alshöhe” and “Im Grasmärchen”, the remains of Roman settlements and in the corridor “Auf der Zahl”, Franconian grave finds testify to a very early, sedentary settlement of the municipality. The first written mention of the place took place in 893, at that time still as "Stedeheym". A conceptual separation between the municipalities of Ober- and Niederstedem, which no longer belong together , was made from 1528. The two places - in the documents "Over et Nyederstedem" - belonged to the provost of Bitburg in the Duchy of Luxembourg until 1795 .

In 1848 Niederstedem had 218 residents in 22 houses, making the village the same size as its parish and administrative center, Messerich . The mayor's office of Messerich , created under Prussian administration in 1816, was merged into the mayor's office of Alsdorf in 1856 , from which the Wolsfeld office later emerged. Since 1970, the municipality has been administratively part of the Bitburg-Land Association and since 2014 of the Bitburger Land Association .

In the tank farm explosion near Niederstedem on September 23, 1954, 29 people were killed by the explosion of a large tank filled with aircraft fuel.

economy

Like many other communities in the Eifel, Niederstedem is dominated by agriculture , so there are still several full-time farmers. Although most of the employed commute to the very nearby district town of Bitburg, the Trier area or Luxembourg, Niederstedem itself has a small number of jobs with a few businesses. This includes two inns, a repair workshop and an RWE transformer station in which the Vianden pumped storage plant is also connected to the German power grid.
