Oberstedem is a municipality in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Bitburger Land .

geography

Geographical location

The municipality of Oberstedem is located about 5 km south of Bitburg and 25 km north of Trier . It is located in a rural area and is assigned to the type of area with a particularly unfavorable economic structure in the regional spatial planning plan. The district is in the area of agricultural priority areas of the "Bitburger Gutland".

geology

The Oberstedem district lies in the core of the Trier-Luxembourg Bay, in the area of the Keuper plateau of the central Bitburger Gutland on a plateau with a slight relief. This forms the watershed between Nims and Kyll .

history

The place Stedem is first mentioned as "Stedeheym" in the year 893 in the Prümer Urbar . Initially, no distinction is made between Nieder- and Oberstedem. At this time the place belonged to the sphere of influence of the Prüm Abbey . In a papal confirmation of ownership by Pope Innocent II, “Stedeheym” is mentioned again in 1140. It now belonged to the St. Maximin monastery in Trier and to the Bitburg provost in the county of Luxembourg . It was not until 1570 that Ober- and Niederstedem were named separately in a visitation protocol, with the patron saint Brictius for Oberstedem, i.e. between 1140 and 1570 the distinction between Ober- and Niederstedem was made. In 1656, immediately after the Thirty Years War , nine of the former eleven or twelve courtyards or residential buildings had fallen into disrepair or destroyed. After 1816 Oberstedem belongs to the mayor's office in Messerich ; the place had 104 inhabitants and 12 houses at that time. Since 1970, the municipality has been administratively part of the Bitburg-Land Association and since 2014 of the Bitburger Land Association .

Municipal council

The local council in Oberstedem consists of six council members, who were elected by a majority vote in the local elections on May 26, 2019 , and the honorary local mayor as chairman.

Glass museums in the Jacobshof

In the Jacobshof, a longhouse in Trier , dating from 1750, a glass museum was opened in mid-2006 after extensive renovations and alterations . It presents the collections of the Frechen doctor Helmut Wirges. The museum is initially divided into three sections:

  • Raw materials, tools for glass production and processing,
  • Glasses from Roman times to Art Deco
  • Glass for use: beer, wine, medicine, chemical and pharmaceutical glasses, as well as an extensive collection of milk bottles since 1720
  • European glass from 1945 to high-quality modern steel mill and studio glass

The second smaller museum shows productions by the Rheinische Glashütten (Dorotheenhütte in Quadrath-Ichendorf , Sindorfer Glashütte in Kerpen -indorf and Ingridhütte in Euskirchen )

Special exhibitions, such as “Glass Christmas decorations from two centuries” in 2008, keep showing new facets of the material glass.

Another highlight of the Eifel museums is a museum for brewing history in the Jacobshof.

traffic

Ober- and Niederstedem lie between the federal highway 51 ( Europastraße 42) and the federal highway 257 , which intersect about 2 km north in Bitburg .
