geography

The local community is located in the Eifel , about 290  m above sea level. NHN on the river Prüm . Bettingen also includes the Altbettingen, Altenhof and Im Odendell residential areas .

history

Wayside cross

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1319. Today's Bettingen was called Frenkingen in the Middle Ages. Bettingen was located upstream of the Prum in today's district of Alt-Bettingen and was abandoned by its residents during the Thirty Years War (ruins are still there today). As a result, Frenkingen became today's Bettingen.

Until the end of the 18th century, Bettingen was the capital of the rulership of the same name in the Duchy of Luxembourg . In 1794 French revolutionary troops occupied the Austrian Netherlands , to which the Duchy of Luxembourg belonged, and annexed it in October 1795 . From 1795 to 1814 Bettingen belonged to the canton Bitburg in the department of forests . Bettingen became the capital of a mairie . After the region was taken over by the Kingdom of Prussia (1815), Bettingen became the administrative seat of the mayor's office of the same name in the Bitburg district .
