Economy and Infrastructure
traffic
Wolsfeld is on the busy federal highway 257 between Bitburg and Echternach . A bypass that has been required by local residents for decades was included in the urgent need in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan and was implemented as part of the € 2 billion program to improve the transport infrastructure in 2005-2008 . The bypass was opened to traffic on December 13, 2008.
railroad
Wolsfeld was the station of the former Nims-Sauertalbahn (Erdorf - Irrel - Igel), a branch line of the Eifelbahn . This railway line was opened before the First World War . After the route was destroyed towards the end of the Second World War and operations were resumed after the war, passenger and freight traffic continued on the route for a good two decades. The cessation of passenger traffic (conversion to bus) took place in 1969, the remaining freight traffic was shut down gradually and finally in 1995. The Wolsfeld - Bitburg (city) section was dismantled in 1997. A tank farm with siding was maintained directly at Wolsfeld station to supply the American airfields in Bitburg and Spangdahlem. Parts of the disused route section are now used as a cycle path.
