About this picture

Hamm is a municipality in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Bitburger Land .

geography

The village is located in the South Eifel nature park , about 10 km northwest of the district town of Bitburg . It is embedded in the valley of the Prüm , which has strong windings in the Hamms area and flows through the Bitburg reservoir located immediately to the east of the village . Of the extremely small municipal area of 1.73 km², a comparatively small part is used for agriculture (26%), 61% are forest.

history

The oldest written mention of the place name "Ham" is possibly in the commentary on the Prüm Urbar , which the Prüm exabbate Caesarius von Milendonk made in 1222. In the land register from the year 893, among the possessions of the Prüm Abbey in the chapter on Mötsch ( Merxz ), among other things, an unnamed mill on the Nims ( Nimiza ) is mentioned. Caesarius explains that this mill is at "Ham", near the town of Wiersdorf ( Veresdorpht ). It is unclear whether this “Ham” is the present day “Hamm” because it is not on the Nims, but on the Prüm .

Because the Lords of Hamm had taken on an after-fief from the Counts of Vianden , who were related to them , they were patrons of the Prüm Abbey . The Hamm Castle later became the property of Clervaux in the Duchy of Luxembourg before Counts Tornaco and Renesse took over. The property has belonged to the current owners, the Counts von and zu Westerholt and Gysenberg , since 1909. The resulting lordship of Hamm included Hamm, Echtershausen , Wißmannsdorf and Hermesdorf, and until around 1530 Nieder- and Oberpierscheid . In addition, Hamm also owned other areas in Biersdorf , Wiersdorf and Oberweiler , which was dependent on the jurisdiction of the Bitburg provost . In 1672, it was possible to partially acquire the jurisdiction over these areas.

From 1794 the place belonged to the Mairie Biersdorf, which in 1816 passed into the Biersdorf mayor's office of the same name . The latter was incorporated into the mayor's office Bickendorf (renamed Amt Bickendorf in 1927), which in turn has been dissolved since 1970 with other offices in the Verbandsgemeinde Bitburg-Land. From 1970 a holiday village was built in the northeast of the municipality, which is located above the sports hotel on the Bitburg reservoir.

The number of inhabitants has continuously decreased in the past decades. While it stayed above the 50-inhabitant limit until the 1960s, it has since then been at a very low level with several fluctuations. This makes Hamm one of the smallest communities in Rhineland-Palatinate and Germany today .

From 1885 and most recently in 1998 the entire structure was completely renovated and repaired. The chapel attached to the castle is occasionally used for weddings , as is the castle's Gothic Hall , which serves as a wedding room for the Bitburg-Land registry office.

The oldest wayside cross in the Trier district is also located in the Hammer district .
