List of the smallest municipalities in Germany by population
The list of the smallest municipalities in Germany provides an overview of the 101 municipalities that have the smallest number of inhabitants in Germany . Another overview shows the smallest municipalities in the federal states by population. All municipalities that are administratively independent are taken into account.
Smallest municipalities by population
The 101 smallest municipalities are spread across three federal states: Rhineland-Palatinate (70), Schleswig-Holstein (25) and Thuringia (6). Most of the 101 smallest municipalities in Germany are located in Rhineland-Palatinate - here especially in the Eifel - and in Schleswig-Holstein - there especially in North Frisia . The reason: In the course of the regional reform , many small communities in these federal states were not incorporated and have therefore remained independent. In the other federal states, places of this size were mostly attached to other municipalities. Between 1967 and 1978 the states of the Federal Republic of Germany reduced the number of their municipalities. This was achieved partly through agreements between the municipalities on a voluntary basis, that is, the municipalities decided how they wanted to work together in the future, and partly through acts of sovereignty . While in some countries incorporations and community associations predominated, in Rhineland-Palatinate and Schleswig-Holstein new community associations were set up at an intermediate level ( association communities and offices ).
