Niedergeckler is a municipality in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of southern Eifel .
geography
Niedergeckler is located in the South Eifel nature reserve and directly on the federal highway 50 Bitburg – Diekirch not far from Mettendorf . The Brückenhof residential area also belongs to the community .
history
Documented mention of the place in 1453 as Nieder Jeckler , 1477 Nyeder Gecklair , 1762 Niedergeckler . In 1615 Niedergeckler belonged to the Obergeckler dairy in the Luxembourgish county of Vianden with five estates .
With the occupation of the Austrian Netherlands (1794), to which the Duchy of Luxembourg belonged, by French revolutionary troops , the town became French and belonged to the Forests Department from 1795 to 1814 . In 1815 the former Luxembourg area east of the Sauer and Our was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia at the Congress of Vienna . Niedergeckler came to the Bitburg district in the Trier administrative district in 1816 and was initially administered by the Lahr mayor and later by the Neuerburg mayor .
After the First World War temporarily occupied by the French , the place has been part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate since 1946 .
The branch church was built in 1570, rebuilt in 1728 and expanded in 1919.

Municipal council
The council in Niedergeckler consists of six council members, who in the local elections on May 26, 2019 in a majority vote were elected, and the honorary mayor as chairman.
Worth seeing
- The Catholic branch church Sankt Martin von Niedergeckler was built in 1570. The choir of the chapel and the nave date from this period. During the renovation in 1733, arched windows were also installed as part of a comprehensive renovation. The current tower dates from 1877. A sacristy (1910) and a new transept (1930) were the extensions in the 20th century.
- Three valuable wooden figures can be seen inside the church. In addition to the Madonna and Child and Saint Martin, Saint Odilia , who is supposed to help with eye diseases, is also shown.
