Niederweis is on the edge of the South Eifel nature park . The community also includes the Eichelhof, Höhjunk (zip code 54298), Mühle and Waldhaus residential areas .

history

Niederweis Castle

A prehistoric settlement of the area around today's Niederweis is documented by weapons, vessels and grave finds as well as a Roman settlement.

In the founding years of the Abbey of Echternach a Martheus the Abbey donated a piece of land between "Wys" and Enghien . In the year 801, Harduwin and his wife, rich landlords in Bidgau , gave the abbey their property in "Wis quod situm est super fluvio Prumia". Between 861 and 867, other landowners, along with Edingen, are named.

Until the end of the 18th century, the place belonged to the Luxembourg provost of Echternach . From 1795 to 1814 Niederweis belonged to the French department of forests before it was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia on the basis of the agreements made at the Congress of Vienna in 1815 . Under the Prussian administration, Niederweis was assigned to the mayor of Alsdorf in the Bitburg district, newly established in 1816, in the Trier administrative district , which belonged to the Rhine province from 1822 onwards. In 1914 Niederweis came to the mayor's office Wolsfeld (from 1927 Wolsfeld office ), 1970 to the Irrel community and in 2014 to the southern Eifel community .

Niederweis had a train station on the Nims-Sauertalbahn Bitburg-Erdorf - Irrel - Igel. Passenger traffic on the line was discontinued in the northern section, in which Niederweis was located, in 1969, freight traffic in 1988; the tracks were demolished in the following years. The station building had previously been sold by the Deutsche Bundesbahn. The station is located a little outside of Niederweis, in the Alsdorf district. The station was intended to serve the two localities. (A stopping point planned for the municipality of Alsdorf in the 1950s was never realized.)
