history
The Irrel community was newly formed in 1970 from 17 individual communities.
With the aim of improving the efficiency, competitiveness and administrative power of municipal structures, the state government passed the “First Law on Local and Administrative Reform ” on September 28, 2010 . With regard to the municipalities, it was determined that they should include at least 12,000 inhabitants (main residence on June 30, 2009), otherwise they should be amalgamated with neighboring municipalities by the 2014 local elections. The community of Irrel had 9,021 inhabitants on the reporting date. The so-called voluntary phase ended on June 30, 2012. A voluntary association did not come about within this period.
On December 20, 2013, the Rhineland-Palatinate state government passed a state law to integrate the Irrel community into the Neuerburg community on July 1, 2014. The reorganized community bears the name " Southern Eifel community ".
The community of Irrel had filed a norms review complaint with the Rhineland-Palatinate Constitutional Court in Koblenz and claimed that its municipal guarantee of self-government had been violated. On June 29, 2015, the Constitutional Court decided that the incorporation of the Irrel community into the Neuerburg community is constitutional (file number: VGH N 7/14).

coat of arms
The blazon of the coat of arms of the former municipality Irrel reads: "In silver, a blue oblique right-hand wave bar covered with a red glaive cross ."
Fifteen of the municipalities belonging to the association were under the rule of the Duchy of Luxembourg until the end of the 18th century , the majority of which belonged to the provost of Echternach . The glaive cross reminds of this earlier affiliation. The wave bar indicates the border river Sauer .
The coat of arms was approved by the Trier district government on July 23, 1974 .
