About this picture

Schankweiler is a municipality in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of southern Eifel .

geography

The municipality is located in the South Eifel nature park and extends from the northern slope of the Ferschweiler plateau down into the Enz valley . The Rohrbachermühle residential area also belongs to Schankweiler .

history

Grave finds provide evidence of an early settlement in this area. There are legacies from the time of the Cord Ceramics to the Hallstatt culture and the Romans . The Franks left behind an extensive burial ground and various individual graves. It can be assumed that there will be around 4000 years of continuous settlement history in this area.

The first mention of the village of Schankweiler ( Crenchovilare ) shows a deed of donation from 721 in which Bertrada and her son Charibert donated their closed property Crenchovillare in Bedgau an der Prüm to the Echternach monastery .

In the early Middle Ages, Schankweiler, like Holsthum, belonged to the Luxembourgish lordship of Bourscheid , which from 1496 came into possession of various lines of the von Metternich family and in 1753 to the baron Schenk von Schmidtburg .

The parish of Schankweiler belonged to the Deanery Bitburg in the Archdiocese of Trier , Holsthum was a branch of Schankweiler. The patron saint of the church was always St. Michael . In 1570 the parish was still called Hoilzwiler , in a visitation protocol from this time, Holtzwiler was replaced by Schunkwiler . From 1658 only the current name Schankweiler is still in use. In 1594 today's church was built or renovated. The tower, without a helmet, and the sacristy were added in 1729. In 1796 the two bells were confiscated by the French in the first coalition war. Today, St. Michael in Schankweiler is a branch church of Holsthum and has been part of the Irrel parish community in the Bitburg dean's office since 2011.

In 1757 there was no school building, but there was a "winter school", the teacher was hired for three months.

coat of arms

Schankweiler coat of arms
Blazon : "In red a silver, seven-stepped stepped gable, topped with a red, silver day-lit chapel with a roof turret over blue wavy beams, accompanied on the right by a silver cup, on the left by a silver oak leaf with three silver acorns."
Justification for the coat of arms: The stepped gable shown in silver in the coat of arms stands for the shape of the parish church tower in the village. The western front of the Mariahilf pilgrimage chapel, which was built in 1762 and located on a hill above the village, appears stylized on this surface. In the front of the coat of arms there is a cup with nickel wire decoration from the late Neolithic stone box grave of Schankweiler from the tradition of corded ceramics and the cup culture that developed from it. It indicates the early settlement. The sessile oak motif indicates the forest and the origin of the place name. The horizontally lying wave bar symbolizes the river Enz, where the place is located.
