Fraubillenkreuz
The Fraubillenkreuz is a menhir that has been converted into a cross . It stands on the side of the road on the Ferschweiler plateau in the Eifel , between Ferschweiler , Schankweiler , Nusbaum- Rohrbach and Bollendorf .
According to tradition, the missionary Willibrord , who is venerated in the Eifel region, chiseled the 5000 year old menhir with his own hands in the shape of a cross and thus Christianized it . Two figural niches are carved into the stone, which are surrounded by holes. Today it is still around 3.5 meters high.
The origin of the name is unclear. It could be a derivation from "Our dear Frau Bild-Kreuz". Another possibility would be that the name came from the name Sybille , which was used for prophetic women. The last possibility is that the menhir is mentioned in 1617 as "Sybillen Creutz".
