Ernzen is a municipality in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of southern Eifel .

geography

The community is located on the south side of the Ferschweiler plateau , a sandstone plateau . Ernzen also includes the Ernzerhof, Hubertus and Beim Ernzerhof residential areas .

history

The first written mention as "Arenza" came in 895 in a document in which the Lorraine King Zwentibold of the Echternach Abbey confirmed ownership of the place. Later documents speak of Erneza, Herense, Errensem and Ernszem. The form Erneza appeared for the first time in 1148 in a papal document.

In 1570 a local chapel is mentioned as a branch of Echternach, which is restored in 1613 and rebuilt in 1808, equipped with the altar of the dilapidated Liborius chapel from Echternach. Ernzen was one of the four dairies of the Echternach Provostry . It included Ferschweiler , Prümzurlay and Laeisenhof.
