Feeding in a carp pond

A carp pond is an artificially created standing body of water that is used for the economic production of carp and other fish species (see carp fish ) that are suitable for this type of water ( tench , pike , pikeperch ).

Management

The management of a carp pond is a form of agricultural land use and corresponds to pasture farming in the field of fishing . Primary production is stimulated by fertilizing the water body . The aim is to enable the highest possible production of fish across the stages of the food chain .

The construction of this type of water corresponds to the economic objective described. Fertilization causes a normal lake to tip over because the hypolimnion layer becomes free of oxygen due to the high levels of biomass. A carp pond, on the other hand, is laid out so flat (approx. One to two meters) that the mixing can bring in new oxygen to the bottom every day.

Carp ponds are regularly fished in autumn, for which purpose they are drained with a drainage structure called a monk . The pond floor is laid out as a very flat funnel towards the monk. So the fish collect in front of the monk when the water level drops.

Carp ponds are usually built in stepped groups in order to be able to keep several age groups of the fish separately in sequence. A distinction is made accordingly between spawning ponds, breeding ponds and wax ponds for different years of fish.

In some areas (e.g. in Middle Franconia: Aischgrund ) water is only supplied by rain . Such ponds are called " heavenly ponds ". Your water is kept as possible and used when fishing to fill the next somewhat lower pond. In any case, the water intake of carp ponds is limited to a minimum over the summer (compensation of evaporation and infiltration, approx. One l / s per hectare) so as not to lose nutrients and natural food.
