Alsdorf is a municipality in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of southern Eifel .

geography

Alsdorf lies on the edge of the South Eifel nature reserve . The community also includes the Niederweis train station and Oberecken residential areas .

history

Scattered finds from the Neolithic age suggest an early, undirected settlement of the area. Artifacts, including a well-preserved amphora, indicate a Roman settlement within the boundaries of today's town. In the middle of the 8th century (739/775) an inheritance in a place called "Alctresdorf" ( in loco cognominato Alctresdorf ) is bequeathed to Echternach Abbey .

As early as 1330, Alsdorf was mentioned in the Taxa generalis as the parish of the Archdiocese of Trier and was subsequently managed by various fiefs .

Until the end of the 18th century, Alsdorf belonged to the provost of Echternach in the Duchy of Luxembourg . In 1794, French revolutionary troops occupied the Austrian Netherlands , to which the region then belonged. Under French administration, the place belonged from 1795 to 1814 to the Arrondissement Bitburg in the department of forests . Around 1800 Alsdorf became the seat of a Mairie .

Due to the agreements made at the Congress of Vienna (1815), the region was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia . The resulting from the French Mairie was the Prussian administration 1816 mayoralty Alsdorf the Bitburg in Trier assigned that from 1822 to the Rhine province belonged. In 1914 Alsdorf came to the mayor's office Wolsfeld, (from 1927 Wolsfeld office ), 1970 to the community of Irrel and 2014 to the community of Southern Eifel .

coat of arms

Alsdorf coat of arms
Blazon : "Under a blue shield head, inside a four-arched bridge in silver, split by a curly red tip, covered with a silver linden leaf, on the right a red high cross, on the left a red finial."
Justification of the coat of arms: A cross in the form of the Fraubillenkreuz is shown in the right half of the coat of arms. In the left area of the coat of arms the depiction of one of the two acroteries , each standing upright on the tip of the west and east gable, was placed on the parish church. The parish church rises on the highest point of the place. Their decorative ornamentation is widely visible in the Nimstal. The finial in Gothic tracery form with leaf or flower ornamentation, which is arranged in a cross shape around the vertical central axis, is based on natural motifs. A four-arched bridge spans the Nims in the head of the coat of arms , which is only indicated by a blue base color. The leaf of the winter linden tree shown in the coat of arms is supposed to stand for the relatively high proportion of this type of wood in the Alsdorf forest and for the partially protected linden tree avenues in the local area.

Buildings

  • A quarry stone church from 1472 had a previous building that was already mentioned in the aforementioned Taxa generalis. The successor building was demolished in 1926, the preserved choir is now used as a cemetery chapel.
  • Since 1904, the neo-Romanesque parish church of St. Peter on Hauptstrasse in the center of the village has served as a place of worship for the communities of Alsdorf, Niederweis and Kaschenbach.

traffic

railroad

The location of Alsdorf was affected by the standard-gauge, single-track railway line Erdorf-Irrel-Igel ( Nims-Sauertalbahn ) until 1988 . Alsdorf never had its own train station, but was served via the Niederweis train station located between the villages of Alsdorf and Niederweis . Passenger traffic on the northern section of the line, in the area of which Alsdorf was also located, was discontinued in 1968, and freight traffic was discontinued exactly 20 years later, in 1988. The tracks were demolished in the following years.

The Niederweis train station, located on the Alsdorf district, had been sold to a private buyer a few years earlier. A stopping point requested by the local community of Alsdorf at the then Deutsche Bundesbahn at the beginning of the 1950s was not realized.

Streets

The B 257 / E 29 (formerly E 42) runs above Alsdorf and forms the direct connection between Echternach (Lux.) And Bitburg . The connection to Alsdorf was changed at the end of 2008 as part of the construction project "bypassing the Wolsfeld location". A three-lane expansion of federal highway 257 with modified connections to the local community of Alsdorf is under construction by 2020 .
