St. Peter is the Roman Catholic parish church of Alsdorf in the Eifel district of Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate . The church is dedicated to St. Peter the Apostle . The parish includes the branches Niederweis with the branch church St. Johannes Evangelist and Kaschenbach with the branch church St. Michael .

history

A church in Alsdorf was first mentioned in the Taxa generalis in 1330 . Already at that time Alsdorf was an independent parish with a parish church in what was then the Archdiocese of Trier .

Initially, the Lords of Brandenburg had the right of collation . Towards the end of the 17th century, this passed to the Lords of Schänen. Before 1700, Herr von Schüsten transferred the right of collation to the Count of Merci. With the French Revolution , the right of collation was finally abolished. Until 1803, Wolsfeld and the Church of St. Hubertus were also part of the parish in addition to today's subsidiary communities of Niederweis and Kaschenbach , but Wolsfeld was raised to an independent parish that year.

Nothing more is known about the church mentioned in 1330. However, in 1472 it was replaced by a new building in Gothic style . This Gothic church received a new choir in 1721 . The old parish church existed in this form until 1926. In that year, the entire church, with the exception of the choir, was demolished. Today the choir serves as a cemetery chapel.

Due to the increased population, the old church became too small at the beginning of the 20th century, so it was decided to build a new one elsewhere. So between 1903 and 1907 today's parish church was built according to plans by the Trier architect and later cathedral master builder Julius Wirtz .

architecture

St. Peter is a single-nave, four-bay hall church in the neo-Romanesque style made of rubble stones. In the east of the nave, the single-bay choir closes with a semicircular apse . The three- story bell tower is attached to the southwest corner , which is square in the basement and then merges into an octagon. The arched main portal is in the westwork, above which a rose window is inserted. The entire structure is spanned with ribbed vaults.

Furnishing

In the interior, the furnishings from the time it was built have been preserved. These include the high altar with two side altars, all in simple neo-Romanesque forms, and the pulpit . The historicist painting has also been preserved. Also worth mentioning are the 14 stations of the cross, the stone neo-Romanesque baptismal font, and a wooden figure of the Pietà .
