Gilzem in der Eifel is a municipality in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of southern Eifel .
geography
Gilzem is located in the southern Eifel , around 12 kilometers south of Bitburg and around 17 kilometers north of Trier . The community also includes the Kleebornerhof and Weinsfelderhof residential areas .
history
Gilzem was first mentioned in 1212 in a document from Archbishop Johann I of Trier under the name "Gelime", in which he bequeathed income from Gilzem to the Stift zu Pfalzel . In later documents the place is also called "Gelisheim" and "Geilsheim".
Until November 7, 1970 Gilzem belonged to the district of Trier-Saarburg and was incorporated into the district of Bitburg-Prüm, which was newly formed on the same date.

Municipal council
The council in Gilzem consists of eight council members, who in the local elections on May 26, 2019 in a majority vote were elected, and the volunteer local mayor as chairman.
