About this picture

Minden is a municipality in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate , on the Sauer . It belongs to the community of southern Eifel . Minden is a state-approved resort .

history

Finds from prehistoric times as well as Roman and Franconian settlement traces can be found in the area around Minden. The first documented written mention can be found in a document from the 12th century, which speaks of a " property at the mill in Munda that used to belong to the Echternach Abbey ". In the 15th century Johan von Vinstingen, Falkenstein and Bettingen owned Minden. The Taxa generalis mentions a church in "Munda" after 1326. It was built in the Romanesque style at the beginning of the 12th century and has been extended or rebuilt in 1717 and is still there today. Minden belonged to the parish together with Menningen and Irrel until their dissolution in connection with the French Revolution to the grand parish of St. Peter and Paul in Echternach, after which the place with Menningen came to the parish of Edingen in 1802. In December 2007, both places were removed from this parish as part of the structural reforms of the Diocese of Trier and incorporated into the parish of Irrel.

While in the past the majority of the population found their income in agriculture, there are now only a few active farms in Minden. Many of the residents now work in neighboring Luxembourg.

On June 7, 1969, Minden was separated from the Trier district, which was later dissolved, and incorporated into the Bitburg district.
