St. Silvester is a Roman Catholic branch church in the local community of Minden an der Sauer in the Eifel district of Bitburg-Prüm ( Rhineland-Palatinate ).

history

The Taxa generalis mentions a church in "Munda" after 1326. It was built in the Romanesque style at the beginning of the 12th century and has been extended or rebuilt in 1717 and is still there today. Minden belonged to the parish of St. Peter and Paul in Echternach , together with Menningen and Irrel, until they were dissolved in connection with the French Revolution , after which the place and Menningen became part of the Edingen parish in 1802. In December 2007, both places were removed from this parish as part of the structural reforms of the Diocese of Trier and incorporated into the parish of Irrel.

description

The Romanesque village church is consecrated to St. New Year's Eve and dates from around 1220. It was restored in the 17th and 18th centuries, the latter is indicated by the date 1717 in the newly built entrance portal. The slightly indented choir tower closes off the two-bay cross-vaulted hall behind which a small sacristy was added to the east. The choir is vaulted by a pear-shaped cross vault , which rests on horn consoles, as can be found in Trier, St. Matthias, among others. In the middle niche of the baroque high altar stands a figure of Mary with a child, flanked by the saints Silvester (left, depicted as Pope) and Wendelin . A statue of Sebastian stands in a small sandstone arch in the nave. A Roman figure spoil can be seen in the north wall near the entrance .

In 2007, the outside of the church was renovated and given a new coat of paint, which gives the building a closed appearance with powerful corner painting and the color of the acoustic arcade openings in the tower. As part of the renovation of the village center, which has been carried out for several years, the former church cemetery and the square in front of it were also renovated and redesigned. The interior of the building was renovated in 2011, culminating in the consecration of the altar on March 27, 2012 by the then Auxiliary Bishop Helmut Vom . Relics of St. Willibrord and Blessed Mother Rosa Flesch were inserted into the baroque high altar .
