Helmut Karl This (born May 15, 1962 in Neuwied ) is a German Roman Catholic clergyman and has been Bishop of Aachen since November 12, 2016 .

Life

Helmut This grew up in the Neuwied district of Heimbach-Weis and, after graduating from high school in Bendorf, studied Catholic theology and philosophy in Trier and Tübingen . On July 8, 1989 he was ordained a priest by the Bishop of Trier, Hermann Josef Spital , and was initially chaplain in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler . In 1992 he became a research assistant for dogmatics at the Trier Theological Faculty and in 1998 he was awarded a Dr. theol. PhD . In 1996 he received a teaching position for homiletics at the Institute for Pastoral Psychology and Homiletics of the Trier seminary . From 1997 to 2004 he was the head of the vocational induction of chaplains. From 1998 to 2004 he was also a cooperator with the title of pastor in Waldrach , Kasel and Morscheid . In 2004 he was appointed pastor in Adenau , Dümpelfeld and Kaltenborn . He also worked as a lecturer in homiletics at the St. Lambert Study House in Lantershofen . In 2009/10 he took over the professional induction of the chaplains as acting head and was appointed parish consultor (advisor to the bishop in cases of conflict).

Pope Benedict XVI appointed Helmut This on February 24, 2011 titular bishop of Narona and auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Trier . The episcopal ordination received his Bishop of Trier Stephan Ackermann on June 5, 2011 at the Cathedral of Trier ; Co-consecrators were the auxiliary bishops Robert Brahm and Jörg Michael Peters . This Pax Dei omnem sensum exsuperat chose as the motto “The peace of God exceeds all understanding” from the letter to the Phillipians ( Phil 4,7  EU ).

Helmut This belongs to the Faith Commission and the Pastoral Commission of the German Bishops' Conference .

On September 23, 2016, Pope Francis appointed this bishop of Aachen . He swore the oath of allegiance prescribed by the Reich Concordat , Article 16 of 1933, on November 3, 2016 in the State Chancellery of North Rhine-Westphalia in the presence of Prime Minister Hannelore Kraft . The inauguration took place on November 12, 2016 in Aachen Cathedral .

In May 2020, Helmut This was elected as the successor to Bishop Georg Bätzing as co-chair of Synodal Forum 4 - "Living in successful relationships - living love in sexuality and partnership" of the Synodal Path in the Catholic Church in Germany.

Synodal process

In January 2018, Helmut This started the synodal process "Today with you" in the diocese of Aachen. The motto is a short version of Jesus' word to Zacchaeus ( Lk 19.5  EU ). With the broad participation of many interested parties, perspectives and changes in the future within the diocese are to be discussed. In March 2018, various diocese committees complained that they were not involved in the planning of this initiative. The bishop was concerned about the criticism of his leadership style.
