Wilhelm Arnold Günther OPraem (born October 31, 1763 in Koblenz , † August 22, 1843 in Trier ) was the city ​​archivist of Koblenz and Roman Catholic auxiliary bishop in Trier .

Life

Wilhelm Arnold Günther came from a family of bakers, was a student at the Jesuit high school in Koblenz and then entered the Rommersdorf Premonstratensian Abbey . In 1783 he took his religious vows and completed his studies in theology and law at the old University of Cologne and Trier University . He put his focus on the subject of law. On September 22, 1787, he was ordained a priest in Trier and returned to Rommersdorf, a current district of Neuwied , in 1788 . In the abbey he worked as an archivist and librarian and worked in pastoral care . In the years from 1797 to the secularization in 1803 he worked as prior , economist and pastor in the Premonstratensian monastery Altenberg , which was subordinate to the Rommersdorf Abbey .

Archivist in Koblenz

When the abbey in Rommersdorf was dissolved in 1805, Günther moved to Koblenz-Ehrenbreitstein as a private person . In 1805 he began his work in the archive of the Department de Rhin-et-Moselle in Koblenz and in 1814 he became archivist for the district government in Koblenz . His first measure from 1805–1809 was the thorough reorganization of the archive documents and directories in the Koblenz city archive . This resulted in the archive being in a complete condition, which did not lose any of its material even under French rule . He remained in this position until 1826, when he wrote his main works.

Auxiliary Bishop in Trier

On June 18, 1826, the Trier bishop Josef von Hommer ordered the city archivist Günther to Trier and appointed him vicar general . In addition to the duties of vicar general assigned to him, he also took over the thorough administration of documents for the diocese of Trier. His further career was on August 23, 1828, the appointment to cathedral capitular , followed on June 23, 1834 his appointment as titular bishop of Arabia and auxiliary bishop in Trier. The University of Breslau awarded him an honorary doctorate in theology on May 24, 1834 . On September 14, 1834 Wilhelm Arnold Günther received the episcopal ordination by Bishop Josef von Hommer. In 1835 he was Mitkonsekrator at the episcopal ordination of Johann Wilhelm Bausch of Limburg .

Josef von Hommer died on November 11th, 1836. Since the Prussian state did not confirm his successor Wilhelm Arnoldi , the auxiliary bishop was elected by the cathedral chapter as vicar capitular , and he held this office until 1842. During his term of office, religious orders were settled in the Diocese of Trier, denominational disputes were settled, the episcopal convict was set up in Trier and the first Elisabethverein , founded in 1842 by Maria Merkert , began its work. Works

After extensive research, the archivist Günther presented a basic history of the Rommerskirchen Abbey in 1794, in which representations and document collections had been processed. From 1805 to 1826 he worked as an archivist and in 1813 published his “Topographical history of the city of Coblenz from its creation to the end of the 18th century”. The historical work "Codex diplomaticus Rheno-Mosellanus", created by him between 1822 and 1826 in six volumes, is a source work with over 2000 documents from the 8th to the 18th century and still serves as a research source today.
