Johann Wilhelm Bausch (born March 17, 1774 in Steinbach (Hadamar) ; † April 9, 1840 in Limburg an der Lahn ) was a German clergyman and from 1834 to 1840 Roman Catholic Bishop of Limburg .

Life

Bausch came from a humble background and received on 15 April 1797 in Ehrenbreitstein the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Trier . In the following years, Bausch worked as a parish administrator in Siegen , as a professor at the grammar school in Hadamar and as a pastor in Frickhofen and Hadamar. Initially a representative of Enlightenment positions, he made a change to ultramontanism . After the reorganization of the dioceses , he was incardinated in the newly founded diocese of Limburg .

After the death of the first Limburg bishop Jakob Brand , he was elected bishop on January 8, 1834 and on September 30 of the same year by Pope Gregory XVI. approved. He was ordained bishop on January 25, 1835 in Limburg by the auxiliary bishop in Trier , Wilhelm Arnold Günther .

Like his predecessor, Bausch saw himself heavily dependent on the Duke and government of Nassau . Within the church, Bausch was able to mediate between the Enlightenment wing and the ultramontane wing more successfully than his predecessor. With his term of office began an era of restoration and dedication to tradition, which, however, only came to full effect under his successor.

Bausch died on April 9, 1840 in Limburg and was buried in Limburg Cathedral .
