Carl Schmidt (Bishop)

Carl Schmidt (born May 14, 1912 in Obervölklingen ; † March 11, 1989 in Trier ) was a German theologian and Roman Catholic auxiliary bishop in Trier from 1962 to 1981 .

Life

Schmidt was born as the son of the miner Christian Schmidt and his wife Margarethe, geb. Suck, born. The father died in Lorraine in the first year of the war in 1914. Schmidt grew up in Bliesransbach near Saarbrücken, and in 1923 his mother enabled the ten year old to enter the Trier Konvikt. After graduating from high school, she studied at the seminary in Trier. On August 2, 1936, he was ordained a priest by Archbishop Franz Rudolf Bornewasser of Trier . After 3 years as a chaplain in Bad Kreuznach, Schmidt was given the opportunity to study history and a foreign language in Göttingen. In September 1940 he became Caritas director in Saarbrücken, two years later chaplain in Gersweiler and vicar in Saarbrücken . In 1953 he was appointed pastor of Wemmetsweiler , in 1956 city pastor of Saarbrücken.

On July 8, 1962, Pope John XXIII appointed Schmidt as auxiliary bishop in Trier and titular bishop of Thasus . The episcopal ordination received his Bishop Matthias Wehr on September 9 of that year. Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Luxembourg , Léon Lommel , and Auxiliary Bishop Bernhard Stein from Trier. In 1963 Carl Schmidt became an honorary member of the KDStV Saarland (Saarbrücken) zu Jena in the CV.

Schmidt took part in all four session periods of the Second Vatican Council as a council father , was chairman of the Diocesan Caritas Association in 1963 , episcopal vicar in 1966 and cathedral dean in 1967 . He earned special services in the Bolivienhilfe and in the lay organization of the diocese of Trier. He was released from the office of auxiliary bishop on October 1, 1981.

After his death, Schmidt was buried in the auxiliary bishop's chapel on the cloister of Trier Cathedral .
