description

The megalithic complex survived as a large misshapen mound with a poorly preserved chamber. The complex was excavated in the 1920s and 1930s and revealed an intricate structure. Its shape is unique in Great Britain . The chamber lies within a kidney-shaped stone mound that is stabilized by internal dry stone walls . The only chamber had a forecourt to the west. The entry stone had two natural holes, but they are so small that they do not allow access to the small, two meter long and one meter wide, rectangular chamber. The split conglomerate capstone was approximately 3.0 m by 2.0 m.

Stoves and pottery were found in the forecourt . The chamber contained unburned but broken human and animal bones and a bone needle. The bones come from at least 20 people. The forecourt was surrounded by dry stone masonry . There is a narrow, long terrace on the side that leads 100 m to the south. The ancient surface beneath the complex yielded substantial amounts of pottery, human and animal bones, and a variety of core stones and flakes of flint and arrowheads . Fragments of "Graig Lwyd Stone" (a mine in Conwy ) were found as well as four polished stone axes. Other finds were a bone, a stone ball , bowls and a stone with a pecked triangle.

Individual evidence

  1. Graig Lwyd at Penmaenmawr is one of the largest mines for ax rock in Wales. Surface outcrops of fine-grained volcanic rock were used to make axes that could be found in the Peak District, Yorkshire and the Midlands
