Wilhelm Arnoldi (born January 4, 1798 in Bath near Bitburg in the Eifel , † January 7, 1864 in Trier ) was Bishop of Trier from 1842 to 1864.

Life

Wilhelm Arnoldi attended the seminary in Trier and received the 1821 ordination . As a professor of oriental languages , biblical archeology and homiletics , he taught at the Trier seminary. In 1826 he exchanged his teaching activities for the pastor's position in Laufeld in the Eifel, but was called to Wittlich as city pastor as early as 1831 . In 1834 he returned to Trier as cathedral preacher and cathedral capitular .

The government refused to confirm his election as bishop in 1839 because Arnoldi had opposed the government on the question of mixed marriages . Only after a second election on June 21, 1842, was he confirmed as bishop by Friedrich Wilhelm IV . On September 17, 1842, he was ordained Bishop of Trier by Johannes von Geissel .

During his tenure, he favored the foundation of monasteries and restored the discipline of the clergy . The Trier pilgrimage of 1844 to the “ Holy Rock of Christ ” exhibited in Trier Cathedral and kept since the Middle Ages , to which Arnoldi had called, which gave the external cause for the German-Catholic movement , caused a great stir . He showed particular interest in church art.

In 1855 Arnoldi consecrated the newly built parish church of St. Laurentius in Saarburg.

On September 24, 1857, the parish church of St. Nicholas was consecrated in Kottenheim .

After a stroke, Bishop Arnoldi died on January 7, 1864 in Trier.
