St. Nicholas in Kottenheim

The old church was closed in 1853 because it had become dilapidated, and in 1854 it was completely abandoned except for the tower. According to the plans of the architect Vincenz Statz , a three - aisled neo - Gothic basilica was built from 1854 to 1857 based on the shapes of the Cologne Minorite Church . On 24 September 1857, took place the consecration of the present church by Bishop Wilhelm Arnoldi .

During work in the church in 1901 about 20 graves with partially inscribed and ornamented grave slabs were found. Two stone slabs have been preserved from this, which today form the floor in the cross chapel in the old cemetery. The church tower was raised in 1904 according to plans by the architect Caspar Clemens Pickel , who was born in Kottenheim .

In the years 1959 to 1961 the church underwent extensive redesign. In 1991 the interior was renovated. In 1997 the church tower was renovated and in 2005 the roof structure was extensively renovated. In 2013 the entire church facade was repaired and the sacristy was completely renovated.

Furnishing

The interior decoration dates from different centuries.

Three baroque altars in honor of St. Nicholas, St. Anna and St. Antony no longer exist. Today's basalt altar from 1961 was made by the sculptor Erich Moog from Kottenheim. The side altars in honor of St. Nicholas and St. Anthony and the sacrament altar.

Window depicting the Annunciation

The two lead glass windows in the front of the aisles are from the 19th century. The remaining windows are from 1906 and come from the glass painting Oidtmann from Linnich; likewise the rose window from 1910 above the main portal. The choir windows from 1962 were designed by Paul Weigmann .

The colored ornaments in the vaulted ceiling are from 1910.

The tufa epitaph from 1539 depicts the Junker Konrad Schilling von Lahnstein . It shows the Junker, armored and with a helmet on his head, who holds a rosary in his folded hands. The epitaph was extensively restored in 2012-2014.

The body of the figure of Christ on the cross in the choir area dates from the 15th century. An inscription panel from 1708 shows the foundation act of an early mass with 2000 thalers by the Kottenheim-born pastor Nikolaus Müllenbach. A basalt cross from 1690 in the old cemetery commemorates his parents and his brother Friedrich. Another cross from 1689 has been preserved. The baptismal font from 1749 is made of brown Lahn marble. A baroque oil painting by the painter Heinrich Alken dates from 1780.

The Pietà dates from the middle of the 19th century. The figure of Mary at the choir entrance is made from local tufa. The figures of St. Nicholas and St. Anthony came to church in 1961.

The five half-reliefs of Christ and the Evangelists from the old pulpit from 1901 come from Tyrol. The confessionals are from 1903. The tabernacle was made around 1960. The 14 Stations of the Cross made of cast bronze from 1962 come from Erich Moog. The choir carpet from 1970, manufactured by the Union-Teppich-Fabrik in Mayen, represents St. Nicholas, St. Castor and St. Antonius. The woven tapestry "The Burning Bush " from 1997 comes from the Benedictine Abbey of Mariendonk .

Bells

The original bell ringing from the 15th century was replaced in 1895. Due to the war, the church received new bells in 1917 and 1952 . When the church bells began to ring, vibrations occurred which endangered the structure of the church tower. Therefore, in 1997, a new, seven-part bell ringing was inaugurated by the Carl Metz foundry from Karlsruhe, consisting of three large bells (paternoster motif) and four cymbal bells (Salve-Regina motif). The Nikolaus bell from 1952 is now on the church grounds.

organ

An organ from 1859, probably by the organ builder Ludwig Hündl from Linz am Rhein, was replaced in 1992. The new organ has 29 registers and comes from the organ builder Lothar Simon from Muddenhagen.
