The Trier Episcopal Seminary is the training center of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Trier for candidates for priesthood who do not belong to any order. The seminary was founded as "Seminarium Clementinum" by Elector and Archbishop Clemens Wenzeslaus of Saxony on October 16, 1773.

Due to the sharp decline in the number of candidates, the theological training of seminarians was relocated to the Philosophical-Theological University Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt am Main from autumn 2016 . Starting in 2016, the seminary u. a. the orientation and language year "Felixianum" takes place, named after Bishop Michael Felix Korum .

The priestly formation takes place in addition to the study of Catholic theology and aims to ensure areas of priestly formation that are not the subject of scientific theology. The Institute for Pastoral Psychology and Homiletics, founded in 1985, is part of the seminar. The seminary is closely linked to the Trier Theological Faculty . Lectures and seminars take place both in the rooms of the University of Trier and in the seminary.

The Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Karl Borromeo runs the seminar.

Library

The scientific library, together with a theological specialist library (history of the former archbishopric , Hildegard von Bingen , Nikolaus von Kues , Friedrich Spee , Johannes Trithemius , Heilig-Rock-Wallfahrt ) comprises around 515,000 volumes (8,000 new acquisitions and donations in 2010 alone). More than a thousand users borrowed around 32,000 volumes in 2010. More than 11,500 volumes are available in the late baroque reading room.

Around 32,000 titles are more than a hundred years old. The cathedral library with around 9,000 volumes, most of which date from the 18th and 19th centuries, has been on permanent loan since 1936 and is now closed. In addition, some historical parish libraries have recently been taken over and are also closed in their historically grown composition.

The library also has 120 incunabula and around 450 manuscripts from the Middle Ages and early modern times. The oldest goes back to the 9th century.

The library has been participating in the Rhineland-Palatinate digitization portal dilibri since 2010.
