The Episcopal Seminary St. Stephan in Passau is the training center of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Passau for candidates for priesthood who do not belong to any religious order.
The priestly formation takes place in addition to the study of Catholic theology and aims to ensure areas of priestly formation that are not the subject of scientific theology.
history
Bishop Leopold Wilhelm of Austria founded a seminary in Passau in 1638. This was dissolved by the secularization in Bavaria . In 1828, Bishop Karl Joseph von Riccabona founded today's St. Stephan seminary on Domplatz . In 1906 the old canonical yard was expanded. A new building was built at the end of the 1960s in anticipation of the upturn in the Council. In 1988 the seminary church was redesigned.
Current situation
The seminary is in two buildings. The actual seminary, in which the seminarians also live, is in the baroque building. The new building is partially rented to the local Liga Bank, the Episcopal Ordinariate and private individuals, mostly students or trainees.
At the beginning of 2007 it was decided that the theological faculty of the University of Passau should be suspended for ten years due to a lack of students. The candidates for the priesthood of the Diocese of Passau have therefore been living in the Regensburg seminary since the 2007 winter semester and are studying at the University of Regensburg .
As part of the mandatory theological propaedeutic in the field of the Bavarian Bishops' Conference in 2008, 26 seminarians from the 4 southern Bavarian dioceses (Passau 2, Regensburg 6, Munich and Freising 7, Augsburg 11) are admitted to the seminary for the first time Passau moved in. There you will be intensively prepared for studying theology , especially Latin , Biblical Greek and Hebrew . A five-week Bible school in Israel also includes this training.
