Theological preparatory course
A theological propaedeutic course is a compulsory preparatory course for students of Catholic theology who want to become a priest . This is where basic introductions to theology studies and practical liturgical introductions should take place. This includes voice training . In Germany, the integration of the preparatory course into a theological pre-seminar is currently being considered .
The preparatory course is devoted to different topics and is not structured uniformly in German-speaking dioceses . In the diocese of Münster, the preparatory course lasts six months (as of 2020). For the area of the Bavarian Bishops' Conference there is a uniform regulation of the Theological Propaedeutic, which lasts one year and is carried out centrally in Bamberg for the north Bavarian and east German dioceses , but in Passau for the south Bavarian dioceses .
The question of the extent to which the Propaedeutic is used to learn the ancient languages for studying theology was and is assessed very differently by the German dioceses. Although this was not planned in the original conception of the Propaedeuticum, it was added at the express request of the Pope. The Propaedeutic of the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart, for example, arose directly from the diocesan's own language institute, theological pre-seminar Ambrosianum .

In many dioceses, the theological preparatory course includes content in the following basic structure:
Introductory week
The introductory week has the motto "convivere - condividere - conferre" and is dedicated to the basic things of life together in the seminary or theological convict .
Biblical basic course
In a basic biblical course, the basics of church scripture interpretation are to be conveyed and foreign language skills are to be refreshed. Learning the ancient languages of ancient Hebrew , ancient Greek and Latin usually takes place in a theological or philological pre-seminar, if not already done at grammar school.
Systematic basic course
The systematic basic course intends to introduce the basics of the ecclesiastical structure of faith and introduce the theological disciplines of dogmatics , fundamental theology and philosophy .
Basic liturgical course
The liturgical basic course shows the main features of church celebrations and introduces the practical theological problem.
